Problems after Security Update 2007-004

After installing the update, my G4 Dual Processor running 10.3.9
loses its AirPort connection upon waking from sleep and doesn't even
recognize the household network. The only way I've found to
reestablish the AirPort connection is to restart the machine.

I found this report at MacFixit

quote
=====
AirPort connectivity problems Several readers have noted problems
with AirPort connectivity after applying Security Update 2007-004,
particularly an inability to recognize wireless networks. This issue
may be more prevalent on systems running Mac OS X 10.3.9.

One reader writes:

"I am currently running Mac OS X 10.3.9 on my iBook G3. I ran the
Security Update 2007-004 and found that my iBook no longer recognizes
my Airport network when it comes back from sleep mode. The Airport
network is recognized after a restart, but, when I close the
clamshell and open it back up, the network is not recognized. Not
entirely sure what to do about this."

Another reader adds:

"After installing security update 2007-004 I lose the connection to
my wireless router after a period of inactivity. The only way to get
the connection back is to reboot the machine. I don't think I have
security set up on my Linksys router, could this be the problem?
Things worked fine before the update.

MacFixIt reader Mike adds writes:

"Yesterday I updated my Titanium PowerBook G4 (running OS X 10.3.9)
with Security Update 2004-004 and now the built-in AirPort card is
acting up. The symptom is that the card can't see any wireless
networks. But if I reboot the computer then it works again."

=====

end quote

I have four other machines that won't get the update until this
problem gets fixed.

Any response from Apple or fixes for those of us who've already
installed this update?

Have you tried turning AirPort off and then back on again (via the
AirPort Menu Item) when your Mac can't connect to a wireless network?
I haven't installed Security Update 2007-004 yet, but, so far,
whenever my Mac does not log back into a WLAN, this procedure fixes
the problem without having to resort to rebooting the machine.

Jochen.

Re: Problems after Security Update 2007-004

I had this exact problem (wireless connection lost after wake from sleep). MacFixIt has posted a solution that involves deleting a few files and restarting. This fix worked perfectly for me. <http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070426085542328>

David,

Thanks.

Can you clarify what you mean by "I've always fixed them by deleting the network connection and creating it again. Also the saved connection."?

What is the "network connection" and where is it saved?

Sorry. I should have said a "location" under the network system
preference. Plus I'd delete any and all saved Wireless connections that
are seen in the Airport setting of the Network System Preference. And
last any saved wireless password in the Keychain.

Then restart before putting back any settings to make sure all the
"empty" settings are saved before you create new ones.

This all may be overkill but it seems that Apple hides what is really
going on "under the hood" so well it's hard to see the complete
interaction between these three things. I've put things back so that
from a user perspective it looks identical to what is deleted and
everything just starts working where it didn't before.

Re: Problems after Security Update 2007-004

I am having complete system crash (multiple/day) after performing this update as well as applying the latest Aperture update. All applications and the computer requiring a reboot (reminds me of the old days) on my new iMac 24" after the screen of death appears asking me to hold down the power button for 5 seconds. Oh, and I'm 5 days past my 90 day support window so they told me to pony up or hang up. It is definitely acting very PC-like.

Re: Problems after Security Update 2007-004

Solved the problem of finding and connection to the AirPort after the update with the suggestion from Steve Gaul who pointed at MacFixit. It worked for me (using a G4 and Sys 10.3.9) without a problem.

It involves "dragging the following files to the trash:   1. com.apple.kernelcaches (a folder in /System/Library/Caches) 2. Extensions.kextcache (a file in /System/Library) 3. Extensions.mkext (a file in /System/Library/) (You will need to enter an administrator password to move each these files.)

Restart your Mac after deleting these files and check for restored AirPort connectivity.

Re: Problems after Security Update 2007-004

Bill, My son's new Mac had the same thing happen last night! He has tried restoring from his startup disks several times and nothing is helping fix the problem. He finally decided to "pony up" and is talking to tech support. I hope he finds a resolution. I will bookmark this page and let you know if they are able to help him find a solution other than driving 4 hours to the nearest Apple store. Oh, and he has pro care which doesn't really do anything as far as tech support.

Re: Problems after Security Update 2007-004

Since installing the 2007-004 security update, my trusty iBook G3/900 goes to the gray death screen overlay, forcing a manual restart, whenever awaking from sleep. I haven't had any airport problems, but the restart isn't acceptable.

I'd download and run the combo update to see if it might clear up any
corrupted bits and pieces.

You can also visit an Apple store for free.

Re: Problems after Security Update 2007-004

Apple has released version 1.1 of Security Update 2007-004.

For 10.3.9 client users, it is supposed to fix the wireless
connection of wake from sleep problem.

For 10.4.9 server users, it fixes a faulty FTP daemon configuration
that allowed traversal up out of one's space.

For the rest of us, it includes nothing (so 10.3.9 server and 10.4.9
client users won't see it in Software Update).

Re: Problems after Security Update 2007-004

For the past few weeks my G3/800 mhz tower running OS 10.3.9 gets a gray screen with a notice in three languages to push the power button to restart. This is after awakening from sleep. I have not had any consistent Airport problems, just this annoying reboot. I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this issue. This behavior began after Security update 2007-004.

On my own I've add an issue of at least 2 random shutdowns on my G5
1.8. Another person has the issue on a mac mini G4 on the MacFrance ML.

I've seemingly cured the issue for me by re-applying the 004 update
PPC with the .pkg downloaded from Apple website. I look forward if it
solves the issue for the mac mini too (it may be something else).

More than 2 days later, it's still working without these shutdowns so
there may have been a link.

Re: Problems after Security Update 2007-004

After reading about all the problems; imagine my surprise on finding
that my imports from a Kodak P850 suddenly went smoothly: using an
Optex memory card reader.

After 6 months of importing no more than 6 shots at a time to the
desktop and rebooting whenever the import froze; which averaged every 3
lots of 6...

Was it Update 2007-004 showing it's sunny side or an unconscious
download of Pro Application Support 4.0
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/proapplicationsupport40.html> ?
Anyway I'm happy; but will be cautious of pushing my luck by going on
to look for better support of Kodak Raw Files!

George
