Multiple internal IPs appear suddenly

[thmryn]thmryn - 02:38am Jan 29, 2010 PST

Like many Mac users, I use a small utility called IPMenu to monitor my external IP address. Recently this utility reports that I have two, new, internal IP addresses. These additional IPs (172.16.94.1 & 192.168.140.1) are not related to my LAN and appear after startup even when not directly connected to the LAN and with Airport off. My MacBook Pro with up-to-date software functions normally. Can anyone reveal this mystery. Kind regards

Do you have anything like Parallels and Fusion that create virtual network interfaces with their own IP addresses?

Did you install Parallels or VMWare? They add a virtual adapter used for networking with the VM.

Most likely VPN or virtualization software like
Parallels/Fusion/VirtualBox. Turning on internet sharing will also assign
an additional IP to your computer. It's also possible your firewire port
has grabbed an IP address for some weird reason.

Go to your Applications folder, open the Utilities folder, open Network
Utility.

In the Info tab there will be a drop down box for each network interface.
You can select each interface listed to see which IP is assigned to which.
Post the name of the interface and that will give us a better guess.

Both the 192.168.140.1 and 172.16.94.1 ip addresses are private network
addresses so you aren't exposed directly to the internet via either one.
