Anyone else out there having problems with AIM on iChat?

[Hettinga, R.A.]R.A. Hettinga (apparently) - 01:48pm May 17, 2009 PST

The last few days or so, possibly since the 10.5.7 upgrade, but I'm
not sure, my copy of iChat has not been able to log in to AIM.

Bonjour iChat works fine.

Logging onto AIM on their web page client works fine.

Adium works fine.

It's just iChat.

This is annoying for a number of reasons, the biggest of which is that
my wife's going off-island to Boston next week, and we use iChat video
via AIM to talk a couple times a day, and to occasionally share
screens, when she's having a problem with her machine.

So, anyone else have this problem?

I expect there are work-arounds here, we both have Skype for video,
for instance, but I'd rather fix this if it's possible.

Thanks!

Cheers,
RAH

I seem to be able to log in to AIM OK with iChat (although out of my
vast collection of a half-dozen "buddies" none are active, so I can't
be sure it is working). I installed 10.5.7 last evening.

Me too, now. Very strange.

Thanks!

As a backup if you can't get iChat working, the latest beta of Skype
includes screen sharing. Oh, and IMO, Skype's video chat is much
better then iChat's--and I hate to say that, but it's true. My son and
I have done a lot of chatting recently, and we both agreed that Skype
was doing much better than iChat at video, so we switched to Skype for
that.

Consider also that Skype's screen sharing, as of a few days ago, is
cross-platform with respect to Windows. Skype just released a new
beta on Windows (the Mac beta with screen sharing has been out for a
few months). Anyway, I've tested it and it works quite well.

One wonders whether Apple should give up its effort with iChat, or
whether it already has. Notably there is no version for iPhone. If
I were Apple, I'd preload Skype on every platform and forget about
iChat. How does iChat expect to compete with a communications
platform that boasts 40 million users (or 400 million depending on how
you count them)?

I imagine that has more to do with AT&T and SMS revenue protection than it does the underlying AIM technologies and protocols.

I still very much like iChat, though most of my "IM" is now on
twitter. Still, it works well, the screen sharing is brilliant, and I
find it a lot more stable that Adium or any of the other IM clients.
(iChat stays open for weeks without issue under 10.5)

I used to say that, but for the past few weeks, whenever somebody
would try to initiate a chat with me, iChat would freeze, and I would
never even get the notification that somebody tried to text me. I
would have to force quit iChat to get it working again. In the end,
since I couldn't solve it, I switched to Adium. I'm not happy about
it, but I have no time to problem-solve it.

I've pretty much given up on iChat and replaced it with Skype. There have been too many occasions that iChat gave me an error, usually that my correspondent failed to answer, when at the same time Skype worked fine. iChat generally seems quite flakey.

I find that Skype quite often has crashed without any notice. That is,
it LOOKS like it's up, but will not receive calls or messages. It
will notify you of an incoming call, but you can't click on "accept
call" because Skype is in Rainbow mode. The only way out is to force
quit it and relaunch it. This happens about once a week (I have Skype
up all the time as it's my 'landline' phone).

No problems here with iChat on the public internet. I use Adium on
the intranet at work hitting a Jabber server, and I've had no
problems with it either. Both seem functional and reliable.

I regularly run into problems logging in with ONE of my email based
accounts, but not the other and never with my .Mac address.

The main email based account appears to connect to the server, but it
doesn't show me any of my buddies as been online, nor can they seem
me... but my other iChat logins work fine.

This problem first started happening when I moved to Leopard about 12
months ago.

You know iChat does Jabber, too? I say it in the off chance you don't
know. :-) I use(d) Jabber on iChat for Google Chat, which is simply
Jabber.

Thanks, and yes I do know that iChat does Jabber. I use both for the
same reason I also use Eudora, Entourage, Mail, Gmail and Yahoo Mail
- to know how they work when I am asked the inevitable questions
about troubleshooting (by friends and family who know that's what I
do).
