New HP 2133 Mini-Notebook
David Weintraub (apparently)
- 09:29am Apr 26, 2008 PSTvia emailI wonder how HP's new 2133 sub-notebook will affect sales of the
MacBook Air. Can the MacBook Air still claim to be the world's
smallest PC? Is the HP too small to be useful?
I think the MacBook Air hits a sweetspot with a sub-notebook, but with
the new sub-sub notebooks, it is beginning to look a bit large.

Claim is thinest, not smallest. The MBA is manifestly not the
smallest (and wasn't when released), depending on what is measured (it
might have a crack at least enclosed volume, but "no one" means that
by "smallest").

I've recently gotten the Asus EEE PC which is much smaller and lighter
than the MacBook Air. It has a tiny screen that has about 1/3 of the
pixels of the MacBook Air. But it also costs 1/4 as much. It's too
small for prolonged use but it makes a wonderful 'Portable DVD player'
for playing DVDs I've converted to H.264. And it does great playing
old games (Freddi Fish, Putt Putt) for the kids. These small
inexpensive computers won't affect Apple much (high-end consumers) but
I'd hate to be a budget laptop company now.

Apples and Oranges, I say (pun intended)
The 2133 was built for the education market, I wouldn't let a child within 10 feet of my Macbook Air.
The HP is a very nice machine, and certainly the most useful of the sub $500 mini-notes. I think it's just being compared to the Macs because it's so pretty :)
I certainly plan on buying one.
