Printer sharing problem Laurence Hawkins - 03:20pm Apr 24, 2008 PSTGuest UserMy HP Deskjet D2360 printer is connected to my iMac running OS 10.3.9
which is set to share with two other Macs through a wired Ethernet
connection. This has always worked smoothly, but recently neither of
the "other" Macs can see the shared printer. Any attempt to print,
results in a spinning icon, necessitating a forced quit of the
application involved. I have run Disk Utility to repair permissions,
and of course checked the "Print & Fax"" page in my System
Preferences. Still no solution! Any ideas?

I have had continuous problems with my printers since OS 10.5.X came
out. The easy way, a sure way (?), but a fairly long way, is to get
rid of your printer(s), reinstall the driver if required, and start
fixing the sharing and preferences. That is the conclusion I have come
to.

Was your 10.5.x install a clean one or an upgrade with setting copied form a prior system?

David,
It was a clean install of Mac OS 10.5.X on an Intel iMac, plus the
update afterward; nothing from a prior system. But, I do remember a
similar problem (according to the best of my memory…) with TIGER, and
probably PANTHER.
Friends have also mentionned that matter over time, but they are
mainly EXPERT, and worked directly into the Unix core when in deep
trouble. Apple should look into that matter to really simplify matter;
the number of printer pilots included in the System makes it hard to
know exactly what is going on; for example, the relation between the
driver you install and the one coming with the System.
I have two Canon Inkjet (color) and a Samsung Laser (b & w).
The best of luck and, especially, patience.

Re: Printer sharing problem
I made a minor adjustmant to the orientation of my router, which was
running a littlr hot, to improve convection cooling, and this sems to
have improved my broadband connection and solved the printer sharing
problem! Or was I just lucky?

Very lucky! Maybe a poor connection was lurking. I do disconnect my
router when I have problem witn Internet and network, before doing
anything else! I does solve 99% of the problems… before attacking the
printer matter mentioned earlier!
