Problem with Entourage 2004 (vers. 11.4.0)

Hello everybody,

I hope someone has an answer to the following question:

I bought my wife a PowerBook G4 Aluminium (1.5 GHz, 1.6 GB RAM, Mac OS
10.4.11). From her late PowerMac G3 beige running Mac OS 8.6 I imported into
Entrourage the database from Outlook Express 5.06. Everything was copied
just fine (settings, accounts, mail).

However, on every try to fetch the e-mails of her two accounts (t-online.de
and gmx.de) she gets four times the error message "Connection impossible".
After clicking "OK" the e-mails are collected just fine.

I do have exactly the same PowerBook G4 (and a PowerMac G4 MDD) with exactly
the same configuration. I, too, imported my mailbox from an Outlook Express
database. I don't encounter any errors. My daughter, too, has the same
PowerBook and fetches mail from six different providers, using Entourage,
she encounters no errors whatsoever...

The network settings are identical on every machine. Ethernet (built-in) is
the first entry, Airport the second entry for accessing the Internet in this
order. Modem (built-in), Firewire (built-in), and Bluetooth are disabled
entirely for network access.

I don't know where to look elsewhere for what might cause these errors
(Connection impossible). When surfing the Internet with Safari or Firefox
there are absolutely no errors, so I think it has to be a thing with
Entourage.

Regards,
Udo Huth

When trying to troubleshoot something like this, I like switching to
Apple Mail for testing against, as it's Connection Doctor tool can help
pinpoint what the configuration problem might be. Once you identify what
you have wrong there, you can bring the settings back to Entourage.

The problem is unlikely to have anything to do with network settings,
especially if as you say everything else works, and the connection does
go through eventually.

My hunch is that it could be using the wrong server port, &/or you are
(or are not) using SSL and the server would prefer the opposite setting.

There is a very comprehensive Entourage troubleshooting Web site
here, that might help:
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/index.html

If it doesn't help, you may want to ask for assistance on this
newsgroup:
microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage

Check in a new Identity
Check in a new User with a new Identity

Does either of these solve the problem?

Tcpflow might be useful in seeing what Entourage is saying to your ISP when
the error occurs. See directions here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>

Another application I ran into recently that does the same thing but has a
different interface.

EavesDrop....Let it capture some stuff then double-click any of the lines of
text in the main window to see more detail.

I can answer my own question... With the help of the Entourage
troubleshooting web site (recommended by Randy B. Singer) I found a long
forgotten rule... It obviously tried to access an AppleScript on the former
HD of the former G3.

After copying the AppleScript to the PowerBook's HD and pointing the rule to
the new location all is well again.

(If only Microsoft would generate error messages from within their programs
which were helpful...)

How is Entourage supposed to transmit warnings from external
scripts/applications? That's one of those "programmer error" things.

If: "Microsoft would generate error messages from within their
programs which were helpful..." Half the Microsoft certified program
fixers would be out of work; the other half would be trimmed back;
they would all start recommending Mac + Leopard in retribution...

Not to pick on MS's 18th century business visions: a lot of the
world runs this way.

Well...

it is a rule from inside Entourage which oughta access the AppleScript. An
error message "File xy not found", would have been clear and helpful.

Generating an error message of "Connection impossible" for trying to access
a file on a no longer present HD while you're trying to connect to your
e-mail-account, suggests there are problems with your connection to your
e-mail provider...
