Problems with Eudora on OS X 10.5 (Leopard)?

[Lucchesi, Nello]Nello Lucchesi - 02:21pm Apr 7, 2008 PST

In a recent article (http://db.tidbits.com/article/9545) Adam says:

"Although Eudora 6.2.4 has taken some body blows from Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, the email program largely keeps on ticking. That's not to say that it's as stable as it used to be, and I'm experiencing more crashes and oddities than in the past."

I'm still running 10.4 and I'm more interested in Eudora running smoothly than new features (that I know about) from upgrading to 10.5 (Leopard).

I'm interested in hearing from others about problems they've had with Eudora since upgrading to Leopard.

Thanks.

No problems at all on my G5 iMac, Eudora 6.2.4 on OS X 10.5.2. The
only scary moment was when I started Eudora the first time after
installing 10.5.2 (archive and install). It opened as a "new" Eudora
with a new Eudora folder, and it looked like the mailboxes were gone.
But I copied my Eudora folder from a SuperDuper backup volume,
clicked on the Eudora Settings file to open it, and God was in his
heaven. I dont know why this happened....

I'm somewhat nervous about writing this because I don't want to tempt
fate, but Eudora has been fine for me under 10.5 (up to and including
10.5.2). I did have one crash that corrupted the TOC of my outbox.
The only reason that was strange is because I never had crashes
before. But this is one crash in 4+ months of running Eudora under
10.5.x basically all the time. I performed a variant of Adam's steps
and, with a recent Time Machine backup, managed to recover the outbox
pretty quickly.

However, there does seem to be a variety of experiences with Eudora
under 10.5 and not everyone has been so lucky. It's difficult to tell
before you install, but some useful information can be found in the
thread below where people who had problems initially discuss how they
managed to stabilise Eudora under 10.5.

Re: Problems with Eudora on OSX 10.5 (Leopard)?

I use Eudora under Leopard (10.5.2), G5, PPC, and it crashes regularly. Once, because of some crash, most of my emails in the In folder lost their pointers to attachments (the attachments are still in the related folder but not accessible any more from the emails). Also, the transliteration of the Greek language doesn't work any more. All in all, if using Eudora is more important to you than upgrading to Leopard, just stick to good old Tiger.

To reiterate, for the most part, Eudora has been fine. Apart from a
general but not troublesome increase in flakiness, problems I know to
exist:

* In the Task Progress window, there are some cosmetic redrawing
problems if you show two or more simultaneous tasks.

* When you attach files to a message, do not use Message > Attach
Document - just drag the file into the message window.

* Do not use sounds that came with Eudora, either for new mail alerts
or as filter actions. Here's what Qualcomm says:

>In order for Macintosh Eudora to work well under OS X 10.5.x
>'Leopard', you need to turn off the use of specific sounds in

Entirely unacceptable, Adam. Unacceptable. People I talk to on the
phone a lot know what the sound means, simply for hearing it in the
background. It's a Pavlovian thing for me.

But I was inspired by the audio processing software thread I just
looked at. So I decided to do something about.

0) Check out Eudora and see that the other options are just alert
sounds. I can add alert sounds that I've made myself, right?

1) Check to see what audio software I have my hard drive. Audio
Hijack Pro and Amadeus Pro.

2) Load up Audio Hijack Pro and record the Eudora New Mail sound.

3) Look for exporting options in Audio Hijack, and find none. It
appears to just be an mp3. That probably won't work.

4) Load the mp3 from Audio Hijack Pro in Amadeus Pro.

5) Looks like stereo, so convert to mono.

6) "Save As..." and my best guess for what format OS X might want for
an alert sound....AIFF.

7) Google search: mac os x alert sounds. First hit is from Apple, how
to add an alert sounds.
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106409>
  - put it in ~/Library/Sounds, or /Library/Sounds
  - must be aiff, with .aif extension. I'm all set!
  - I could have used iTunes for the conversion. Of course!

9) Quit out of Eudora and load it up again.

10) Set Eudora to use my new sound in Preferences/Getting Attention.

And it's worked twice since I started writing this.

Now if somebody at Qualcomm would just post the AIFF version for
public use, Eudora users who have no other need for Audio Hijack Pro
and Amadeus Pro could make the same switch.

I say "somebody from Qualcomm" to avoid any copyright issues --
unless Qualcomm licensed the sound from a third party like some of
the libraries. If you are not worried about copyright issues, you
can find a copy at
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/sounds/Eudora_new_mail.zip>.
It's quite a bit louder than the one that comes with Eudora, but it
is essentially the same sound.

Why? Doesn't the sound actually use the stereo channels like the Apple
Sent Mail sound?

Just to toss in a comment here. To my wife and many of my business clients the phrase
"but not troublesome increase in flakiness" is the same as saying it's broken. They live is a somewhat binary world when it comes to computers. Computers do what they want them to or they are broken.

I can confirm this. I experience (both on a PPC and on an Intel machine, Eudora sounds disabled):

¥ÊThe toolbar (horizontal, small icons only) seem to come and go randomly;

¥ some start-ups result in the endless beachball and I have to quit and launch it again

Is it crashing when you use the "Attach Document" menu item?
If so, you can just drag the files into the header part of the
message to attach them.

Does anyone expect things to get better with this program?

How are you trying to attach files? There is a thread on TidBITS on
this topic: don't use the menu to attach a document. Drag and drop a
file (the little symbol in the title bar is all you need) onto a new
message.

To clarify, an increase in flakiness is just that, but it hasn't
really caused any significant trouble for me, and saying that Eudora
has seen an increase in flakiness makes no comment on the flakiness
level of other email programs, which would seem to be just as high,
if not higher in some cases.

I strongly suspect that is one of the known problems that I wrote
about in the article - attaching via dragging works fine.

>Does anyone expect things to get better with this program?

No, of course not. But I do wish things would get better with the
email programs still in active development, and that hasn't yet
happened to the level that would make me want to switch away from
Eudora. :)

Hmmm...and after Tonya showed just how easy it is to switch, too. ;-)

Over the years, I've realized that short of a hard need that a current
application simply cannot meet, i.e. unsupported protocols, etc., email
clients are probably the most personal thing anyone uses on a Mac.

I'd say the level of personal attachment is greater than even to keyboards
or mice.

Definitely. Among other things, I'm a software trainer (Mac OS X,
Adobe stuff, etc.)

I've often stated that if it's possible to *feel* towards software,
i.e. if emotional terms would be applyable, that then I'd say "I love
Eudora". And I do. And Eudora is directly followed by Adobe
Photoshop. I guess I'm hopelessly geekily perverted.

Cheers, Tom
