Maybe being the butt of copyright suits makes some firms more sensitive to issues????

The first paragraph is the key:

> The Cupertino, Calif.-based computer company filed a formal complaint
> earlier this year with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office opposing
> an application by New York's official travel and tourism organization
> to trademark a "GreeNYC" logo featuring, you guessed it, an apple.

They may loose but Apple is doing what they must. If you want to keep a trademark you MUST by law defend it. Said defense is what establishes the boundaries. If they don't defend against near or somewhat near misses then close calls get harder to defend. It's a lousy world but it is the one we live in.

Not sure about the Real Steve Jobs, bur the Fake one is clearly conflicted over this:

I told Katie this was going to backfire on us...

...Nevertheless the legal big brains said we had to fight this or we could lose our logo or something. So we did it. I'm sorry. I really am. Wasn't my fault. Just want to be clear on that.

Cheers,

This would be the case if it resembled the Apple logo; IMHO, not only is it no cigar, it ain't even close. Biting a big one is strikingly distinct from infinity.

Apple is getting so much attention for this suit in the press (at least here in NYC) that what should be their high note of the day is being overshadowed - iTunes has beat Wallmart to become the top music retailer in the US:

Well, the first time I saw it I thought it was a new Apple logo. YMMV.

Can't say why exactly, it just looks like it somehow. The proportions?

Funny how this showed up now. Wired posted the actual filing at http://www.wired.com/images/pdf/apple_opposition.pdf
  .
Note that it is dated January 16, 2008.
