I would suggest VueScan is worth a look. It works well for me using
an Epson Perfection 1200 (with 10.5.8) which is actually running
through a SCSI to Firewire adapter. There is a demo you can download
to test if it works.

Re: Scanner software
VueScan from Hamrick software. It gets updated (it seems) every five
minutes with new scanner drivers and gives all the features you'd
expect from the scanner manufacturer.

If you really like the scanner check out VueScan. And once you have paid for it it will likely drive any scanner you ever have. Old or new.

I just use Apple's "Image Capture" program with my scanner (Epson
Perfection 2450 PHOTO).

What SCSI to Firewire adapter are you using. ?

It is a FR1SX from Ratoc Systems: http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/FR1SX.html
My scanner has a document feeder (which is also supported by VueScan),
at the time this would have been expensive to replace making the
adapter more cost effective, as scanner prices have reduced that may
no longer be the case.

Patrick,

Re: Scanner software
Drivers? I’ve been using the built-in Image Capture since I
purchased my 2400 Photo. Still supported and scanning wonderfully
under 10.6.2
Connect scanner and launch Image Capture from the Applications folder.

I would suggest SilverFast AI Studio from LaserSoft Imaging. It is the most comprehensive, and powerful scanning software I have seen. And I know they specifically support the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo scanner. See: http://www.silverfast.com/product/Epson/309/en.html. Most pros I speak with say that this program is the gold standard to getting control of scanners. I use the version for my Nikon 5000 film scanner, and it is scary how much you can control, and how much it does automatically.

There may still be drivers that need to be installed before Image Capture will work with a scanner. If I recall correctly, in Snow Leopard, they are installed automatically if you chose to install the printer drivers when you installed the OS. If the driver hasn't been installed, plug in the scanner and run Software Update. It will download and install the necessary drivers for you.

Re: Scanner software
I run an Epson Perfection 3200 on a G5 with. 10.5.8 using Epson Scan just
fine for most tasks. You can download it from their website.

You're right, I'd forgotten there was an extra step required in Snow Leopard.

Re: Scanner software
I would recommend trying the open source TWAIN-SANE package < http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/> It is free and it works with an extremely large range of scanners. It has kept my old Microtek scanning for many years now. The TWAIN driver will work with Image Capture.
