As I'm sure you've been told since this appeared on the TidBITS blog,
this function is also accessible from the Energy Saver preference
pane, under the Options tab...

Or if you don't want to change the behavior of the power button, just follow the advice in this tip <http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/quicksleep.html> and press Command-Option-Eject to directly put your Mac to sleep.

Interesting - my old Wallstreet used to have a key-combo to put it to sleep
(shift-cmd-option-zero, IIRC). That disappeared on the AlBooks but I found
another method - one that's even quicker than a 2 second hold-down:

Hit the power button to get the Restart/Sleep/Shutdown dialog, then hit the
'S' key. It's at least a 50% time saving on the Apple method (if that extra
second is important to you!)

Ah, yes. The intuitive Macintosh interface.

(Snide remarks aside, it does work--it seems to "take" when command
and option--or one of them--is released.)

to try this)

Re: Power button

I also wanted a dedicated "sleep" button (having killed the hinge on my former powerbook by opening and closing the lid a dozen times a day).

What worked for me was opening System Preferences->Keyboard & Mouse->Keyboard Shortcuts->Application Keyboard Shortcuts->All Applications; and assigning "Sleep" to F8 (press fn to enter this). I believe you need to log out and back in for changes to take effect.

This seems to work fine in all contexts except Photoshop Elements, which assigns F8 to opening one of the tool palettes...

Re: Power button

This discussion threw me into a state of confusion. Have I or have I not all these years been using the Power button with: R for restart, S for sleep, and Return for shutdown?

These actions seem so natural to me that they don't even register.

I just confirmed the sleep action, but (thanks to Jim Fowler and ForgetMeNot) reloading my 50 odd unread Safari tabs just to confirm the others seems unneccesary. Try for yourself.

Don't know about the Intel machines.
