Mac OS X 10.4.8: anyone tried it? salidacreative - 11:53am Oct 6, 2006 PSTI was happily using 10.4.6, but when 10.4.8 came out I thought it might be time to update. I backed up to a partioned USB drive (I know, not bootable) using SuperDuper (great program!). Downloaded the 153MB update, installed and all was well. For a while. Then everything slowed to a crash, got worse, nothing worked, restarted numerous times. Repaired permissions several times. Verified HD using the install disk. Used Apple Hardware Test - everything checked out ok. In the end I did a "restore" using the install disk and the USB back up. Seems ok now - but this was completed just 30 minutes or so ago, so we'll see. Lost about 2 days time on the computer. Now, what was I doing before all the crashing started? I was looking through old downloaded software to delete, things that I either never used or never installed or were outdated. Some I had to install and open to see if I wanted to keep them. The one that caused weird things to happen was the Fax software. A bunch of "console" windows opened after which I had to restart. And now, I think this was the cause of the problems. I do not have a phone line connected to the computer and don't intend to. I have deleted this software - it either came with the computer or with the previous computer I had. Comments, ideas, experiences, or suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Could the problem here be a missing intermediate update? I've had no problems so far with 10.4.8

10.4.8 is doing fine for me on Macbook, G4 Mini, G4 dual 533.
Combo updater in all cases.
Fax software on Mac has long been a can of worms--your suspicion may
be well-directed.
Note: a problem has achieved Apple note status with 10.4.8 on Mac
Pro with boot volume on RAID--boot failure, with Apple solution being
to reapply the same sort of update (combo vs delta) while booted from
another volume.
Others report problems but this is nothing new. I've been having no
problems with updates others report problems with starting with
whatever the thing following 10.0 was called. (Or, going back to the
old days, starting before System 7.) My only update problems have
been self-inflicted: PEBCAK.

I've upgraded to 10.4.8 (from 10.4.7). The first time I rebooted
after the install the finder was incredibly slow doing anything.
(Maybe it wasn't at first, but soon it got that way. I don't
remember how long it took.) But after rebooting, the system has been
fine for the last two days. I'm running the Intel version. (On a
Mini Core Duo.) I'm sorry I can't shed any light on your crashing,
though.

OSX 10.4.8
Alas, before I read about the problems some people are having with the 0SX
10.4.8 software update, I had already installed it using the built in
Software Update.
Touch wood, the machine seems to be behaving normally. I wonder if this
problem is widespread or if it has only affected an unfortunate few.
Has Apple said anything about it officially and are they addressing the
problem?

I'm running 10.4.8 on 3 machines now, each for a day or two,
with no hangs or crashes.

Re: Mac OS X 10.4.8: anyone tried it?
I downloaded 10.4.8 also. Soon after I started getting strange error messages (-10810) and apps would not launch. After a restart everything works fine and apps open like normal. Within a few minutes I start getting the error message and apps refuse to open. After a restart the same thing happens over again.
I don't know what to do except for Apple to fix the problem or (and I really don't want to do this) reinstall OS X.
Any ideas out there?

:-D That's my favourite explanation for "computer problems".
Almost same here. One exception: I think it was 10.3.8 or something,
an update which Apple pulled shortly after and then later published
in a corrected version. That was one update where I was too fast ...
wanted to have it and then later I had to reinstall my system. But
then again you could also say that was a PEBCAK.
And then there was that update which shredded some Firewire drives
(but not mine, I always remove external drives before updating).
And sure, only combo updates. My friends with slow net or pay per
minute connections are very thankful for this ...
Cheers, Tom

This isn’t a solution for your current problem, but I suggest checking out SuperDuper. <http://www.shirt-pocket.com/> One of the options is to create what the author calls “Sandbox”. Here’s a description of how this option works:
A Sandbox is a bootable copy of your system, stored on another hard drive
or partition, that shares your personal documents and data with the
original. In the past, you might have stored this copy away in a drawer as a
backup. With SuperDuper, you actually use the Sandbox as your startup
volume.
You can safely install any system updates, drivers or programs in the
Sandbox, without worrying about what might happen to your system. If
anything goes wrong, you can simply start up from the original system.
SuperDuper has preserved it in its original, pre-disaster state – but all your
new and changed personal documents are totally up to date. Within
minutes, you’re up and running again – without having to go through a
difficult and time-consuming restore process.
Just a satisfied user.

Re: Mac OS X 10.4.8: anyone tried it?
I did the update a day or so after it came out from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8
by software update and have had no problems. I'm running it on an
iBook - 1.42 G4. I did have some trouble after the 10.4.7 update but
after doing a reformat (it was a bad problem) all has been well.

Re: Mac OS X 10.4.8: anyone tried it?
I don't know if it's the update, but the seemingly excellent Mac Mini
in my office, which I'd updated to OS 10.4.8 a couple hours
earlier, lost one chess game for me and then, after, a disgruntled layoff, drew a second
(when I tried again and had an understanding opponent) on Yahoo.
The first incident was especially funny because I'd just forced the win
of my opponent's queen, but when my bishop swooped down to take it, it
was stopped one square early, where (instead of taking the queen) it
was en pris to the enemy bishop. Later, when I tried again, after a few
moves my pieces just refused to move. Again, though, this could
be my old mouse, the Mac Mini itself, some incompatability between Mac
and the Yahoo chess program, or just bad luck. It's wasn't
necessarily the upgrade from 4.7 to 4.8.
Cheers,
Greg H.

No problems on Mac Book, iMac 1.8 GHz PPC, or 2 GHz Quad Power Mac... all combo updates after repairing permissions ... not a single glitch and all run fine...

Re: Mac OS X 10.4.8: anyone tried it?
I personally know of 3 users (two G5 DP and MacBook) who had severe problems after the 10.4.8 update: the startup sequence stopped at the point where Finder would have launched. Upon calling Apple support they were guided through an Archive and Install procedure (ugg!).
One of the G5 DP's Safari kept hanging. He finally installed an older Safari (1.2) and it worked.
Macfixit lists several other users who had these and other problems. I also saw that UniversalAccess gets launched on startup even without turning it on in System Prefs. Activity Monitor shows it using up to 5% of CPU.
I'm skipping this update!

I had an issue that prevented my MBP from going to sleep. It was
handled by a second restart after the installation. Since then my
wireless has been extremely fast to connect when coming from sleep,
so I am not going back under no circumstances ;-) I am really amazed
how my mail has been checked before the lid is even fully open.
Kind regards,

10.4.8
Do people like the 10.4.8 OS upgrade yet? I bought MacBook that came with
10.4.6 installed and I canąt find a 10.4.7 upgrade, just a combined
10.4.7/10.4.8 updater.

Re: Mac OS X 10.4.8: anyone tried it?
I had no problems installing it on a 2.3GHx DP G5 and a G4 Powerbook. Universal Access is turned on to support the 'Zoom using Scroll Ball' feature added. The feature show up only if you system identifies that you have a scroll ball. Furthermore, the application uses CPU only when you use the feature. On My Power Mac, up to 1.7% of one CPU was used, but only when I was actually zooming the screen image.

I've had no problems with it since those I noted in my previous
message on the topic. Since then it's been stable for me. My
previous message is quoted below.

Looks like
< http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1047combointel.html>
would get you 10.4.7.
I have no trouble with 10.4.8 on my MacBook. (I had 10.4.7 on it
while that was current.)
The first ("you must restart") restart after the upgrade is strange
enough to scare people, but I long since learned to do such a
restart, then do something else while whatever is going to happen
happens. In the case of 10.4.7-->10.4.8 via combo updater, the first
restart takes a L-O-N-G time, and then restarts again before much
happens visibly. It then takes a long time again, and then for me
all seemed well.
There was a message earlier about someone who needed to do another
restart before his wireless worked--I didn't have that problem...on
the other hand I routinely shut down the Macbook in conditions where
others put theirs to sleep, so it's possible I didn' t notice.
10.4.7-->10.4.8 on my Dual 533 G4 was more interesting. The same
double restart taking a long time, but that led to a VERY SLOW
machine. When I finally convinced the login window to accept my
username and password, it took 5 to 10 minutes to get to the point
where there was a working Apple menu. "Working" had an odd
definition: click the Apple icon; wait 30 seconds or so for the menu
to appear; click restart; wait about 15 seconds for the item to
highlight. I clicked the item again (which probably wasn't
necessary), and after the ensuing restart all has been well since.

Re: Mac OS X 10.4.8: anyone tried it?
Hi all,
I just tried updating my Macbook from 10.4.6 to 10.4.8 to solve this (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304308) problem.
At around 90% of the install/extract process my macbook turned off and when I tried powering it back, it gave me a grey screen with a "power" icon in the background, telling me to restart. In back of this it has a code with:
panic(cpu o caller 0x0039BDDF: Unable to find drive for this platform: "ACPI".
It goes on like that.
I'm not quite sure what to do next. Is there anyway around this or will I have to take my brand new computer into the shop?
