Playing iPod through iTunes

third-party software is to simply set the iPod preferences to "Manage
songs and playlists manually". When the iPod is set to this mode, the
iPod becomes accessible from any iTunes (not just the one it is
associated with), and all songs and playlists on the iPod become
accessible (no longer greyed out). You still can't copy the songs from
the iPod to iTunes, but you can play the songs on your iPod through
whatever Mac the iPod is connected to.

[Yup, lots of people mentioned this. The caveat is that you can't set the iPod to be managed manually from another Mac, so once I'd left home, it was too late to do this. -Adam]

Actually, that's not the case. When you hook the iPod up to the other Mac,
it asks if you want to link the iPod to the library on that computer; just
say 'No', then select the iPod in the list and click on the iPod Preferences
button. You're set!
[Well, look at that, you're right. The implication in the dialog that asks about linking is that it will erase all the music if you say yes, and that it won't work with iTunes if you say no. I'll plead being sick. :-) -Adam]

Re: Playing iPod through iTunes
The thing that stinks about manual mode is that you can't easily sync your playcounts and ratings back to iTunes for use in smart playlists.
