Apple Updates iPods, Introduces Movies, Previews iTV

I used to download TV shows and watch them on iTunes 6 on a 400ghz G4
and it worked just fine. Now with the new iTunes 7, the playback is
jerky and inadequate because for video playback a 1ghz is required.
Apparently the new downloads are better but require more processor.
How can I reduce the file quality to what it was so I can still use
an older Mac?
All Apple will do is refer me to the basic requirements page and not
give any other infomation, naturally.

Probably the best option for this is iSquint. It can convert things to
iPod video. You can reduce the resolution which reduces the
compression/decompression hit. But downloaded videos from iTunes Store
are protected so I don't know that it will work. If you download from
somewhere else, you might be OK.

I also use ffmpegx which allows tons of customization. Takes a while
to figure out the best settings.

Because the videos are 4 times larger than they were.

Um... on purchased content I don't think you can.
