I don't see much question about Apple's end. I'm pretty sure
Amazon can run as many Mac OS X VMs as they want on Apple Xserves,
and Apple won't make any accommodation for Amazon (or anyone else) to
run MOSX on anyone else's hardware.

        The questions I have are:

What hardware is Amazon using? It's probably not Xserves
given the timing.
        Is Amazon considering Xserves? Hopefully.
Is it logistically difficult to build a MOSX image on your
own Mac, and deploy it? Hopefully Apple (likes Parallels) and Amazon
(likes Xen) will facilitate.

No possible way that that's the case. First, they're deploying now and the Xserve won't ship until October. Even consider that Apple provided test units, I don't know that the months of testing of EC2 to get to this point would factor that in.

Second, Xensource, which is the hypervisor software that Amazon is using, doesn't run under Mac OS X, so that would mean that Amazon would be installing Linux or Windows to run virtualization software.

Third, the Xserve with Xeons look great, but I can't imagine that machines designed for many purposes will be as cheap as machines designed with a single purpose. I would expect Amazon could get 2:1 cost savings by using commodified gear with fewer ports, etc.
