TidBITS on Avantgo

[Gerlits, Dave]Dave Gerlits - 01:55pm Aug 9, 2006 PST

Help!

When I opened up TidBITS in Avantgo on my Palm Zire 71, my palm came up empty.

Does anyone know the right URL to have the latest edition of Tibits show up properly in an Avantgo channel? I tried < http://www.tidbits.com/channels/tidbits.rss >, but all I got was what looks like the "masthead" for Adam and Tonya's vast electronic publishing empire. Any thoughts?

Dave,

They know. <http://www.tidbits.com/pda/> was blank, and now
says "Our apologies for the missing PDA edition. We appreciate your
interest and we are working to have it reappear in the very very near
future."

If there was a one-page edition, or a stable URL for the ToC
without other links, AvantGo or Plucker could use that, but for the
moment I guess we're just stuck reading in a browser or email client.

And it should be online now, though since neither Glenn nor I have a
PDA with which to test, we can't be certain of what it looks like.
Let us know if anything seems amiss.

Re: TidBITS on Avantgo

I just checked the mobile-pda version of TidBITS on my Blackberry 7250 and it looks and displays just fine.

Looks good, although I see <http://db.tidbits.com/pda/>,
which I used to pluck, now redirecting to
<http://db.tidbits.com/pda/index.php>. I changed my plucker.ini, but
it would be a convenience to other readers if the original URL could
provide the ToC instead of the redirect.

Re: TidBITS on Avantgo

Adam and Glenn,

I synchronized again after your message above, and it works fine for me!

Thanks for you help. I love being able to read Tidbits on the go. I use the GTD approach, and reading Tidbits is something I prefer to do Anywhere.

Looks good in WinMobile 5's Internet Explorer and Opera 8.60 for Windows
Mobile. The only difference between the browsers, besides the font size they
choose to use, is Opera doesn't load the TidBITS logo at the top, it shows
the ALT text instead.

The path to the stylesheet is wrong but it doesn't look like it affects the
presentation anyway.

There are a couple of mismatched tags in the footer that keeps the pages
from validating but don't affect the presentation.

Re: TidBITS on Avantgo

I did not start having problems with AvantGo until the redesign. My Palm m130 will not download any issues past August 27 (#894). I didn't see this on the Known Issues list, so I thought I would bring it up. Even though I could download the podcast, I still prefer to _read_ TidBITS (as I have for over a decade) and having it on my old-school Palm still works best for me.

I believe <http://db.tidbits.com/pda/> should still give a nice
bare-bones approach, but I'm really not sure how AvantGo works any
more, or what it's expecting.

cheers... -Adam
