Merging iPhoto libraries steve (apparently) - 02:51pm Jul 31, 2006 PSTvia emailI have, through the course of years, produced quite a mess of iPhoto
libraries. I'd love to be able to combine them into one where there
aren't loads of duplicates. (I can dream, can't I?) It seems that
iPhoto also dates images on import if dates aren't imbedded in image
exif (or whatever) files.
[I believe your only chance on this is iPhoto Library Manager, but I can't really see it eliminating duplicates. You could also extract all the photos, use iView MediaPro to eliminate duplicates, and then reimport into a new iPhoto Library. Tricky, but possible. -Adam]

I can really recommend iView MediaPro, which has many useful features
such as identifying duplicates. The latest version allows cross-
tabulations, once you figure out the difference between using People
and Keywords. I take hundreds of photos of plants and animals each
year during my month of research in Costa Rica, and this program
helps me keep things organized. I love being able to quickly reduce
high resolution photos to a size which friends with slow connections
can easily download. I only use iPhoto for quickly creating webpages
of photos using iWeb, and for getting photos into my iPod.
A question, though, for those familiar with this program--is there
any way of changing the catalog sections? In addition to People, I
would like to have Animals, Plants, etc. Or at least change People to
something more inclusive. My People fields are mainly names of plants
and animals, rather than people.

Yes, search the manual for "catalog sets", and also look for "custom
fields". m.

I don't want to spread FUD but Microsoft purchased iView Multimedia a
month ago.
http://www.iview-multimedia.com/microsoft/
They will continue selling the Mac version, but it seems unlikely
Microsoft will put many resources in developing the product on the
Mac side. At least they didn't do this for other applications and
companies they bought. Btw, Apple does the same. If they're going
to leverage some windows-only technology - which is most likely - the
Mac version will fall behind.
Because this is my prediction of the future it's propably worthless
which is true for most predictions.
iView MediaPro is a very good application and it would be a shame if
the Mac version will die a slow death.

deftly typed : question, though, for those familiar with this program--is there any way of changing the catalog sections? Yes if you have iPhoto 6. You can edit or add keywords From Help:
add a new keyword to the Keywords list:
Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
Click the Keywords button at the top of the window.
Click Add (it looks like a plus sign).
Type your new keyword. To rename an existing keyword, double-click the keyword in the Keywords
list, then type a new name. Or you can select the keyword and press Return,
then rename it. --
