Even if your AppleCare contract has recently expired, it's worth
checking to see if you're still eligible. After entering my serial
number, the download page came up and listed my system, s/n,
AppleCare agreement number, and coverage end date of 2006-04-15. I
was still allowed to download the update by clicking on the
appropriate link.

Re: AppleCare Provides Bootable TechTool CD
Hi Jim Curran,
I think the TechTool 3.1.1 Update you mentioned will only work with MacOSX
10.3.9 or higher...and, only if you have TechTool 3.0 already.
Still, it is a welcome update to those who have run out of their AppleCare
Support time and are running MacOSX 10.3.9 or higher.
Thanks for your time, consideration and efforts,
Ted Abel

Re: AppleCare Provides Bootable TechTool CD
Matt Neuburg says:
Apple's dependence upon third-party software has long been a major
weakness of the AppleCare Protection Plan. For years, AppleCare
purchasers have complained that the package included a Micromat
TechTool Deluxe CD that either wouldn't boot the computer for which
AppleCare had been purchased or (worse) would boot it but, when
run, would damage the hard disk structure in such a way as to make
the data unrecoverable.
He then reports on a new version. Have we any evidence that this
version solves the earlier problems?

I downloaded this a few days ago because I am having a number of
issues with mail and on checking with Disk Utility seem to have a
number of problems brewing. Unfortunately I didn't have access to any
of my install disks AND I knew Tech Tool I had gotten with Applecare
did not support my machine. I went to Micromat and eventually found
the link in their forums for this update.
I then went to link at Apple and followed the instructions to
download and to create a boot disk. I did and had no problem creating
the boot disk and successfully launched from it. I've run the
diagnostic and do have some issues. Due to the severity of the
warnings I have not attempted repair of the hard drive as I may have
to reformat and I don't want to do it without having my install disks
available. [Yes I have backed up my files]

Re: AppleCare Provides Bootable TechTool CD
My Applecare expired June 18/06 and I was able to get the new updated
version of the Techtool program. I'm very pleased to see that Apple
has not dumped people right after their warranty has expired
See ya'

Re: AppleCare Provides Bootable TechTool CD
This is a new release of TechTool [regular and Deluxe], but it
doesn't sound like the other problems have been fixed (a plan to keep
it synced with OS and hardware changes, Apple notifying AppleCare
customers of updates, a safer TechTool that won't corrupt hard disks
even if there is a version skew). I'm an AppleCare AND TechTool
customer but I'm not sure that I should be happy just because
Micromat's made another release. There's no feeling of safety
without a guarantee it'll never mess up my drive again.

You'll never have such a guarantee. Even if 50 people report here
that TechTool fixed perfectly a horribly corrupted HD, it might fail
on your problem. Guarantees are in the same category as free lunch.

Re: AppleCare Provides Bootable TechTool CD
My AppleCare ended in May 2005 and Apple still allowed me to download the file. So it appears if you were an AppleCare subscriber you can still download the update.
I ran the version 3.1.1 application and it worked fine.
