iPod update cause mp3 glitches?

[quentin]quentin - 01:52pm Jul 11, 2006 PST

Since updating my iPod nano to the latest software, I have noticed glitches on the playback of mp3s, notably podcasts from the BBC but also other MP3 music. I believe that I have confirmed that this is a soft fault by "rewinding" the playback and then continuing the play and the glitch goes or moves. Examples of the glitches include clipping and time stretching of a word or note with the intervening words or notes dropped as if they were not decoded but the time code kept. Since this occurred I reset my iPod nano to factory settings and this does seem to have remedied the problem but I still hear that there are artefacts in music that I do not think were there before. Anyone else had this experience? Seems confined to MP3s, not noticed on AACs.

In fact, yes, I have noticed this on our 4 GB iPod nano that I use in
the car. Since the latest iPod update, I've experienced exactly this
stuttering about six or seven times - it's not common, but it's
definitely happening. As you say, it's not related to the source file
- rewinding and playing again does not reproduce the stutter. I've
reported it to Apple.

cheers... -Adam

Thank You for your Ipod nano report!
I have experienced a single instance of double speed playback with aWiretap recording , and low level crunching noise and   digitizing or quantization artifacts with mp3 cd files on a 4 GB Nano since the
6/26/06 update.

Same here. Seems to happen mostly on longer podcasts.

I have a 2gb Nano, one of the first sold in Australia, and I have this problem too - distinct stuttering of podcasts particularly (I hardly ever listen to music) and crackling and popping noises which can't be attributed to the file in question or headphones. My service centre advised reinstalling the software, but the problem remains.

I can't speak to the stuttering, but the crackling and popping noises
might be the equalizer. I have a 2nd generation iPod and I had
crackling on certain songs. I was talking about this with my brother
and telling him that I was going to try and re-rip a bunch of CDs
(though I had ripped them at a reasonably high bitrate). He suggested
turning off the equalizer in both iTunes and on the iPod. Problem
solved -- no more crackling! It's a shame not to be able to use the
software equalizers, but I'm happy with the good quality of the music
now.
