I know its off topic but had noticed no mention
of this on the list and thought his passing was
worthy of some mention.

Whilst never meeting Michael, I found his emails,
contributions to various OS X Server lists and
his books were incredibly useful and my thoughts
and prayers are with him and his family.

Michael was a friend of mine, and will be missed. I know that a small
memorial is being planned at WWDC for those that knew him, and more
importantly that Paul Kent of IDG is working on setting up a
Scholarship in his name for the MacIT track at the Macworld Expo &
Conference, starting in January 2007.

There is an online memorial going on at the excellent OS X Server
resource afp548.com:

On a more personal note, even though it happened in Tokyo (Michael
fell off a balcony while in Japan for some consulting work) I heard
about it very soon afterwards as word spread among his friends, and
it was weird that his iChat handle was still "lit up" in my buddy
list, listed as 'away' ... I stayed up late, hoping it was all a
misunderstanding and that somehow he'd come back online again.

I still haven't removed his name from my buddy list. =(

My heart goes out to his wife Amber... goodness knows her life was
difficult enough being married to Michael (all the travelling, and
all the Michael ;P ), but I know it was better to have had, than to
have lost.

I have a deep respect for his friend Joel Rennich of Apple who was
there in Japan and took on the daunting task of taking care of all
the details and returning his remains to his family. Truly a "friend
in need".
