GraphicConverter and RAW files patrosh (apparently) - 06:46am Jun 5, 2006 PSTvia emailI was using GraphicConverter (which came bundled with my G5) to convert RAW
camera files to TIFF. The problem is that the app turned an 18 M file to a
mere 5 M one!
I have looked through the menu for any method of fixing this problem, but
without success.
I have since used another method, which thankfully turns 18 M RAW files to
54 M TIFF ones, so it is not an urgent problem for me, but I would
appreciate any sound advice on how to get GraphicConverter to work properly
in this regard.

Paul,
GraphicConverter 5.9, OS X 10.4.7, G4 Powerbook. After opening the
RAW file in GC, select File -> Convert & Modify. In the Covert &
Modify window that opens, you can select your options. Choosing TIFF
as the Dest. Format, de-selecting WWW Ready, No Compression in
OPtions... creates a 54MB tif file from an 11.9MB .CR2 RAW file. My
guess is that your current preferences are saving the file in jpeg
format.

Are you saving it as a compressed TIFF?

But just because you've seen me on your TV
Doesn't mean I'm any more enlightened than you

Re: GraphicConverter and RAW files
The problem is that the app turned an 18 M file to a mere 5 M one
So what is the problem? Why should you assume a bug? RAW and TIFF are different file formats. RAW files contain camera-specific information that gets lost in the transfer to any other format. That's why they are called "raw". If you believe you need this camera and sensor-specific information, you cannot avoid to keep the original RAW files from the camera. In most cases, however, you will not notice the difference that results from the processing in GraphicConverter or any other photo software. The reduced-size TIFF files should work fine except for some extreme situations (e.g. low light) where RAW-specific processing might be helpful.
