One thing that tends to cause trouble is duplicate fonts, especially
common on machines that have OS 9 font folders or have had Office X
installed, then Office 2004.
My preferred font management tool is Linotype's free Linotype
FontExplorer X < http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX> creates yet
another fonts folder, ~/FontExplorer X.

Sharon mentions the Linotype program in the e-book. She also provides a nice
checklist of how to prepare things to switch from Font Book to a third-party
font manager such as this, and how to switch back if you decide you want to
do so. The latter is particularly useful if trying out one of the for-pay
font managers.

Re: Mac OS X Font Mistakes
Font Reserve and Font Access...
I had been using Font Reserve for managing my hundreds of fonts in OS 9. When OS X came along, I waited until Apple had added some features and it was quite stable - switched over and upgraded Font Reserve to the OS X version. It was a bit quirky.
Upon upgrading a new Mac G5, during the process of switching and moving multiple hard drives, I accidentally lost all my fonts in their original folders.
Unbeknownst to me, apparently Font Reserve converts them to a proprietary format and folders. (When I look in the font folders the names are all just numbers)
When I upgraded to Tiger, Font Reserve would not launch and showed an error box.
HELP! Is there any way to recover my fonts and then use them in another font application?

Re: Mac OS X Font Mistakes
Not sure if this is common knowledge or it's peculiar to my set up but... Recently I moved duplicate and broken fonts from both Library/Fonts folders to a newly created folder at the top level of my Home folder which I named Fonts. After rebooting and using Font Book I noticed that the relocated fonts were still being recognised by the System (10.4.6) . So it seems that OS X will recognise *any* folder entitled Fonts as containing useable fonts irrespective of it's location.

No, I don't think this is correct. Its location matters, I believe.
$HOME/Fonts and $HOME/Library/Fonts, yes, but $HOME/My Folder/Fonts ?
I don't think so.

Re: Mac OS X Font Mistakes
Insider Software offers a 30 day demo of their FontAgent font repair/
management product.
I highly recommend downloading a copy and running your rogue Font
Reserve fonts through it to clean up suitcase names and duplicates.
Indeed, anyone with a large number of fonts could probably benefit
from its clean-up and de-duplication routines.
It's also a pretty decent font manager, but for a quick clean up of
fonts, the demo is all you need.
