I recently figured out why Eudora has been so slow for me since it went
OS X-native. It turns out that while Eudora is on-line, waiting to check
mail every few minutes, it's dog slow. When I switch over to it from
another application when it's been hidden, it takes a very long time to
draw all the windows and the toolbar; menus take 3-5 seconds to pull
down when I click on them; messages take a couple of seconds to delete
when I pound the delete key; etc. Almost all of these speed problems
disappear when I take Eudora off-line - it then feels nearly as fast as
the Eudora of yore. Unfortunately, having had Eudora set to check my
e-mail every five minutes for the last decade or so, I've gotten rather
used to the behavior and find using off-line mode to be a pain.
If any 6.1 users out there have observed similar behavior with earlier
versions, have you noticed any improvement with the newer version? My
subscription has expired, and I just can't bring myself to spend $40 to
have Eudora count my spam messages (which I can more accurately do on my
own, anyway, by just looking at the Spam mailboxes where all my junk
mail ultimately ends up). If 6.1 offered some features of greater
meaning, such as WebCore integration or an improved filters window, I
would bite, but as it is, there's really nothing in it that's compelling
- unless it's faster.
Another problem I've had with Eudora is that it virtually locks up when
it's trying to contact a mail server that it can't reach for whatever
reason. OS X lets me switch to something else without a problem, but
Eudora itself is unresponsive until it eventually times out and gives
up. Has this been resolved in 6.1?
Regards,
Bob
