Five Years of Mac OS X

March 24, 2001 saw the release of Mac OS X, and the installation
thereof on the G4 dual 533 machine which sits to my left as I type
this. (I have my tee shirt around here someplace.)

John Siracusa's piece at Ars Technica seems worth a read (I've only
skimmed so far). Those of you who wish for the good old days of Mac
OS 9 and earlier won't much like it.

[I concur. It's a nice piece, and it's startling to think about how dramatic Mac OS X changed the platform, for good and bad. The Mac is dead, long live Mac OS X. -Andrew]

Hmm... I know I "celebrated" OS X's 5th birthday last fall. I guess
we are not counting the Public Beta period?

April 7th is my 5th anniversary for first installing OS X as my day-
to-day OS. I was planning on holding out at least until the first
update, but I caved 9 days early.

I'm not. You may of course. I *almost* bought a Cube on which to
run the beta, but another expense came up and saved me.

There's a very interesting perspective on Jobs' OS X complete rebuild
strategy vs. what could be a Widoze debacle in yesterday's NY Times,
"Windows Is So Slow, but Why?:"

least)
