NetNewsWire and NewsGator

As I read Glenn's note about NetNewswire, my heart sank. Sounded like bad news - probably a forced march to subscription pricing.

Then I went to the NewsGator site and read what they had to say about the transition. This is being handled in a first class manner, IMHO.

"Existing NetNewsWire full-version customers will get a free 2-year premium subscription to NewsGator Online".

There's more on the site that sounds good. I still don't love subscription pricing, but I will have plenty of time to judge the value and decide without feeling I am being hustled into a quick decision. This is a fine way to handle a transition.

Does NewsGator have anything to do with the horrible spyware download
manager for windows named Gator?

If not, it was an unfortunate naming choice. If so, I'd sooner chew
glass.

As it is, I am sufficiently suspicious to stay far, far away at this
point.

Re: NetNewsWire and NewsGator

As someone who recently started a job where I'm full-time Windows at
work, the ability to keep up with key sites I follow for professional
reasons while at work via the web is priceless. I don't have to come
home and figure out what I already read and manually mark things as
read in NNW. I've been enjoying NewsGator online a lot in the last week.

Re: NetNewsWire and NewsGator

I've been using NewsGator Online for about a year, after running into
some never-fixed bugs in BlogLines (another online RSS reader/
aggregator). The online service really comes quite close to the ease
of use of NetNewsWire, and actually caused me to completely stop
using NNW, due to flaky sync'ing and inability to check my news
easily when on the road.

Now it works flawlessly from the desktop to NewsGator Online, and I
just couldn't be happier. As far as I know, I don't have a premium
subscription or anything to NewsGator, so this is nothing but good
for me.

NewsGator Online is also a great service and they keep adding new
touches and features to make reading large numbers of articles easier
and more intuitive. I'm happy to see Ranchero Software partnering
with such a quality company.
