iPod Nano as external storage device for beige G3 Macs running OS 9.2.2?

I was given an iPod nano 4GB.

The ONLY thing I would like to do with it is to use it as an 'external
drive' to transfer files between my two beige PowerMac G3/266 Desktops (one
upgraded with Sonnet G4/1000 and the other with Sonnet G3/500) - both
running MacOS 9.2.2 and each with a USB/Firewire card (Belkin F5U008 and
VST/SmartDisk).

I understand that I may need access to a Mac running OS X with iTunes on a
one time basis to set up the iPod.

My question is whether, having done this, I will be able to successfully use
the iPod nano as an external USB storage device with these older Macs
running 9.2.2.

I don't want to break open the new iPod unless I am sure this works (as
otherwise I'll be reselling it).

Apple Genius Bar proved again to be staffed with ignoramuses parroting "not
supported" as their only answer.

Thanks,
    Warren

If it works, you may be stuck with USB 1 transfer speed (12 Mbit/s),
which is painfully slow if you're transferring 4 GB. I can't find the
definitive answer right now, but ISTR you need OS X 10.2 for USB 2
support.
