Non-iPod MP3 Players on a Mac

My wife just received an MP3 player for her birthday. For several
years she has been checking out books on tape from our local library
and listening to them while she weaves on a Sony Walkman. The
Walkman's have a finite life and the one she has now has begun to
drag but none of the local electronics stores have them anymore. So,
since the library has told her that they have a serious problem with
their CD's being returned scratched or otherwise inoperative, maybe
she should consider downloading books from their new electronic
service. So I, naturally figured that an MP3 player was just the
ticket. I could download the audio books, and using iTunes, load the
player. But it seems that the player requires Windows X, nothing
about a Mac or iTunes. So I figured since there has been much
discussion on this list about audio and MP3, maybe one of you has
confronted this problem and has a solution.

The player in question is a SanDisk sansa m200 or m250, (it says one
thing on the box and another on the player ???). We haven't opened
the box up yet, as we may be forced to return it. My suggestion is an
iPod, but I would appreciate any help toward solving this problem.

Stop. What's the MP3 player for in this story? The computer downloads the
MP3s, the computer plays the MP3s. There *is* a computer in your wife's
weaving room, isn't there? I mean, how else does she listen to Internet
radio, BBC Listen Again archives, podcasts, and so on? :)

I use a Rio Cali when running. (I have never owned an iPod.) This device is
totally plug-and-play with Mac OS X - iTunes just sees it and can upload
music to it, bada bing bada boom. After all, USB is USB, and an Mp3 is an
Mp3, so this is not surprising. This does not mean the SanDisk device will
behave the same way. But it shows that some non-iPods work fine with Mac OS
X. m.

Does iTunes see it as a music player and offer playlist syncing
goodness, or does it appear simply as a disk for the copying?

IIRC, SoundJam/iTunes used to have very extensive support for MP3
players from lots of vendors, but I was under the impression that had
faded with time (and perhaps the move to Windows).

Re: Non-iPod MP3 Players on a Mac

I did the Walkman thing with books-on-tape for many years, listening to about 8+ books per month while I painted till Audible.com offered $100 towards iPod with a year subscription a while back- which I am very Happy I took advantage of. The iPod is The way to go and you can get a multitude of podcasts free from NPR etc through iTunes-- but you must have an iPod - return the other thing you bought.
