iWeb and filename length

Apple's new iWeb program sometimes creates files with extremely long
names, over 64 characters for example. A few users have been
reporting in the Apple Forums that the non-.Mac servers they use,
usually Apache, cannot handle them, or will not display pages when
these long urls are requested. No one seems to have obtained any
reasonable explanation from people running the servers why this might
be happening.

I'm under the impression that normally anything up to 255 characters in
a filename should be OK. Is there anyone on the list who knows about
Apache (or other server) settings that could be in effect that would
cut this way back and cause such problems? Basically it would be
helpful if one could tell users what they should ask for from their
server managers to let their sites be fully displayed.

Thanks for any help!

That seems rather odd. I've been publishing to an apache server
without issue since iWeb came out. the only thing I can think of,
and it will reveal a bias on my part, is this real Apache or Windows
Apache? As I recall, some of the characters apple uses might by on
Windows 'naughty" list.

I found the same issue. I created a site in iWeb because it was so quick and easy. I typically use Dreamweaver and used Dreamweaver's FTP function to upload the files to my web site hosted by a third party. File with long names created by iWeb (41 characters in this case) were changed once on the server. For example, iWeb's file, 34BE91CB-E42A-4506-8123-FBEE715D787F.html, became 34BE91CB-E42A-4506-#1A6893.html. I couldn't even rename the file on the server manually. I don't know if this is a function of Dreamweaver (which limits characters to 26, see http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_16396) or an issue with the server.

UPDATE: The problem for me was Dreamweaver, which changed the file names to a shorter version. I downloaded Transmit, a FTP program from http://www.download.com and was able to upload the files without a problem.

I believe this is a known issue with Dreamweaver MX only. Was that
your version?

I've found Dreamweaver's ftp to be very buggy, in both its transfer
and synchronization features. On Dreamweaver lists, I've heard
continuing complaints about it from Mac users. It turned out to be
more of a time waster than a time saver, so I recommend sticking with
a dedicated ftp app.
