I don't know when this started, but I haven't noticed it mentioned here.
Apparently a company called TuneCore made a deal with the iTMS to act as
intermediary between it and *individual* musicians. Through them, anybody can
sell their music through the iTMS.

I lifted out a few things from their FAQ, which are interesting to musicians
considering signing up, but also to consumers, as it seems to provide some
insight in why what album is offered how:
- iTMS decides which songs of an album can be bought individually
- iTMS decides on each track's and album's price
- iTMS decides, per track, whether or not to make a (30 second) sample
available
- the artist's cut is secret, "just trust us"
- TuneCore claims to pass on 100% of that cut
- TuneCore gets a non-exclusive right - you can still sell through other
channels
- TuneCore charges a one-time $0.99 per track to be sold, + $0.99 for each
non-US-iTMS + $ 7.98 'maintenance fee' per album per year ($20,- per album to
take down again)
- main payment processor is PayPal
