Converting AOL.ART compressed files

I have hundreds of pictures I once stored from AOL using their
compression. I now know that was not a "good thing". The pictures are
AOL.art

When I try to open, say 4.jpg, with almost any jpeg reader such as
Photoshop this is the message that I get.
Could not open "4.jpg" because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker is
found.

Using GraphicConverter the message is:
The document "4.jpg" is in ART format. This is a proprietary format of
AOL. So, I can't import the file.

You can avoid the creation of ART files in the AOL software. Please
uncheck the option "Use compressed Images" in the preferences of the
AOL software.

The question is has anyone found anyway to convert these to useable
jpg's without saving them to pict format, opening them in photoshop and
saving as .jpg? Surely somewhere there is a nonproprietary software or way.

[Wow, a file format that GraphicConverter doesn't support; I didn't realize there was such a thing! :-) -Adam]

Re: Converting AOL.ART compressed files

I have found only one tool that can handle the task of converting AOL ART files to something useful, and it only runs on a PC: ACDSee mPower Tools

You can download it (a demo, I believe) from the URL below.

As far as I know, there is no equivalent on the Mac. Believe me, I've looked.

Re: Converting AOL.ART compressed files

I believe the inability of GraphicConverter to convert .art is legal rather than technical.

That is True. I am looking for the technical since I did not ask them
to keep MY photos under proprietary keys.
