Apple Adds 802.11a

802.11a was declared dead by Steve Jobs back in Jan. 2003 when he introduced AirPort Extreme, and it seemed rather dead at the time. The advantage of 802.11a is that it has no backwards compatible mode with the older, slower 802.11b standard.

The big advantage to 802.11a is that my network won't die whenever someone picks up the &#$ cordless phone!

We're thinking of upgrading our G4 Cube to a new iMac. Unfortunately, I just bought a Dell FP1703 monitor to replace my old PowerComputing monitor, and it seems a waste to buy a new iMac with built in monitor. Maybe they'll upgrade the Mac Mini to the new Intel chip. That'll I'll definitely get.  Of course, my sons all have Macs that use the 802.11g Airport cards, so it really doesn't do me much good anyway. Besides, the Airport card in my G4 died long ago, and I simply plug it into my router anyway.

And you get a way cooler installation model, because for full speed, you
have to be about 6' from the base station.
