So I wasn't going to buy it. I didn't need iLife '06, '05 was working just
fine for me. But then I did have that Apple Store gift card from my
brother, and finally I saw the magic words on the iDVD pages: Support for
3rd Party DVD burners. Technically that was available in '05 via Save Disk
Image option but I never really got it to work with a dual-layer burner I
had picked up cheap at Micro Center (even with patchburn). I connected it
to my mini via a cd firewire enclosure I have. I think that might have been
what prevented both iDVD and Disk Utility from allowing me to use the drive.

Crossing my fingers, I trundled down to the local Apple Store and picked up
a copy of iLife '06.

Install from the DVD went smoothly (I assume, I browsed the web while it
did it's thing.) The install includes iTunes 6.0.2 and QuickTime 7.0.4, but
I'd already installed those without problem. I'd also previously upgraded
to 10.4.4, which Apple recommends (although the box says that it runs on
10.3.9 and 10.4.3 too).

After installation I quickly ran through all the apps for a quick
superficial look. They've all (except GarageBand) adopted the iTunes 6
metal look.

GarageBand adds podcasting (and video podcasting if I'm judging the menus
correctly) support. I didn't see a way to be able to a group podcast a la
Mac Notables or This Week in Tech. It would be cool if it could add Skype
as a track.

iWeb looked neat for basic sites. It can publish to .Mac or Publish to a
Folder which can then be uploaded to a non-.Mac server. Not sure if
blogging can do trackbacks. One cool feature, you can select an object
(picture, text, etc...) and move it forward or backward (in front of or
behind) another object. So you can create text over an image very easily.
Also guidelines for centering and aligning are included (I think Keynote
has these, I'm familiar with them from XCodes GUI layout program.)

iMovie can open more than one movie at a time. Hopefully when I get a
dual-core this means I can import in one movie window and edit in the other.

iPhoto needed a database update so I made a backup first. It seemed to go
OK, but even though it said it rebuilt the thumbnails cache, some of my
thumbnails are wrong. I haven't tried re-running a repair yet to fix it.

iDVD you can set the type of DVD you're making (dual-layer or
single-layer.) I believe you can setup and layout a dual-layer DVD and do a
Save Image even if you don't have a dual layer burner yet.

I don't know if it was the 10.4.4 update plus iLife '06 update but both
Disk Utility and iDVD do see my cheapo Dual Layer DVD burner. I've
successfully burnt an image to disc from Disk Utility (single layer disk
though, I don't have any DL blanks lying around). Also the image was
created in iLife '05. I haven't created an iLife '06 image yet. But the
fact that it shows it by name makes me confident it will work. The player I
have is a Mad Dog 16xDVD. I think I paid $50 for it at MicroCenter just
before Christmas although they sell them now for $75.

iDVD 6 seems slower. Can't say this for sure, but it's been plugging away at a movie most of the afternoon now and I would've sworn iDVD 5 would have been done by now.

Also you can't do any dual-layer stuff unless you've got a dual-layer burner connected. I turned off my dual-layer firewire drive and all the options for creating dual-layer images are grayed out.

iMovie 6 seems a bit buggy to me. I've crashed it (usually on when exiting anyway) a couple of times, but I've been having problems with getting to play back either on the computer screen or to the TV via my Hollywood Dazzle converter. I can usually fix playback to the computer screen by doing a full-screen playback, then exiting.

iMovie 6 has a new preference to Ignore Audio on Import and it's ON by default. If you want to import from a camera with audio, be sure to turn this option off.

iPhoto 6 upgrade broke the iPhoto Widget I downloaded.

iPhoto 6 and older hardware

Now we know the answer to that: It won't install. "iLife 06 requires at least a G4 processor" -- -- Marshall

Where are you seeing this preference? I don't have it here.

OK, I feel like I'm going insane. I imported an hour of video and didn't
get the audio, checked the preferences and that option was under the import
options of the settings.

Now I can't find it on my machine either. I swear it was there.

Out of curiosity I opened iMovie preferences. I clicked the import
option and found a option labeled "Filter audio from camera" and it
was checked. Was this the preference to which you were referring?

No, that option was there too (and still is). I distinctly remember
there being
5 options under Import option, and having the dialog up when I typed in the
Ignore option I sent earlier.

Filter audio from camera is supposed to filter out pops from the
camera. When I
turn it on I still get audio imported, my first import didn't import
any audio.

I have compiled a list of iMovie HD 6 bugs, features and fixes at:

<http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovie_HD_6_bugs.html>

Please send feedback to Apple if you can confirm these bugs with your setup:

<http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html>

[Or, sign up for a free online Apple Developer Connection membership at <http://developer.apple.com/membership/online.html>, and then report the bugs at <https://bugreport.apple.com/>. Apple pays much more attention to those than to the feedback messages. -Adam]

iMovie 4 got one lousy bugfix and several well-known annoying old bugs persisted. iMovie HD 5 fixed some v4 bugs and introduced some new ones. History repeated itself and many well-known and old iMovie HD 5 bugs were never fixed <sigh>. iMovie v1.0.2, v2.1.1 and v2.1.2 were OK but the quality of later versions has been a disappointment.

The jerky PAL export to DV tape was fixed with iMovie HD 6.0.1, so now I actually consider iMovie HD 6.0.1 the best version right after v1.0.2, v2.1.1 and v2.1.2 because the remaining v6.0.1 bugs aren't actually SO bad :-|

- Some analog to DV passthrough converters don't work like they do in iMovie 4.0.1

- iMovie HD 6.0.1 renders jaggy still images when sending them to tape or iDVD. I can't believe this bug has survived from iMovie 4 to iMovie HD 6!

- Added titles render the underlying video slightly fuzzy with PAL or 16:9 NTSC

- In iMovie HD 6.0.1 added effects make iMovie display a wrong aspect ratio

- Exporting via the expert settings as a DV stream or .avi deinterlaces video and loses the timestamp

- iMovie HD 6.0.1 deinterlaces the video and loses the timestamp when pillarboxing or letterboxing

- Reversed Effect deinterlaces video when iMovie 4 correctly preserves interlacing by changing field dominance

- Some transitions have interlace-related flicker or distortion

- iMovie HD 6.0.1 doesn't update the progress bar when importing .dv clips

- File/Export/iDVD's "Share selected clips only" option puts chapters to the wrong places

- Check the details and updates to the list at:

<http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovie_HD_6_bugs.html>
