Cleaning up iPhoto Library

I have a 5 GB iPhoto Library with many albums (mostly by
month) I want to retain on a PowerBook, using up space I can't
afford. I'd like to break it into a few pieces, one containing all
the images from 2004, another pictures through 2003, and another
2005-and-onwards.

I'm thinking of making 3 copies of ~/Pictures/iPhoto\
Library/, opening up each one (Option-drop onto iPhoto.app or
something like that), and deleting the irrelevant years. Is there a
better way?

[Honestly, I can't think of a safer one, and it's easy to select all the photos from a year in iPhoto 5, so it shouldn't be at all time consuming, assuming you have the space somewhere else to work on the folders. -Adam]

I've done exactly that on my eMac, and I use the free iPhoto Buddy to
manage them:

http://www.nofences.net/iphotoBuddy/

Once I set up year-based libraries early in 2005, iPhoto Buddy made it
easy to launch the one I want -- I actually replaced iPhoto in my Dock
with iPhoto Buddy. This last week I used it to create a new 2006
library, and the transition has been seamless. I recommend the
approach to anyone who has a lot of photos in iPhoto.

If you put your older libraries on an external drive or a networked
volume, that should work too, in case you only want to keep the most
recent one on your PowerBook.
