Can anyone cite a good review or survey of current books on digital
image manipulation and printing?

It's an indirect source, but books are often mentioned and recommended in
the Adobe Photoshop Elements forums at
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14.eeb4f8b.

If you haven't already, you may also want to read what the very
impressive Charles Maurer has to say right on this website:

Re: Digital photography books

Hi Jerry,

On his Cool Tools site <http://www.kk.org/cooltools>, Kevin Kelly
recommends:

Pro Digital Photographer's Handbook
Michael Freeman
2005, 256 pages
$16
<http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/001034.php>

I haven't read it myself, but on these types of issues, a personal
recommendation by Kevin is worth its weight in gold.

Re: Digital photography books

There's no shortage of titles on this topic but they are largely dependent upon the software you have at your disposal and the way you are shooting in digital.

Two that I've found worthwhile are:

1. Bruce Fraser's book on Adobe Camera Raw but make sure you get the 2nd Ed'n if you have Photoshop CS2. Understanding the interface of the Camera Raw Plugin was one of the best investments that I have made in the last 6 months.

2. Photoshop for Photographers by Martin Evening. Evening is a portrait photographer so most of his examples are geared towards that type of shooting. He does, however, make a good job of explaining the way Photoshop works as I gather he's been a beta tester for Photoshop for several years.

But I'm hoping someone will buy me Dan Margulis latest book entitled "The Canyon Conundrum" (Peachpit Press) for Christmas. Dan's earlier Book "Professional Photoshop" is an amazing revelation on what is contained within a PS File and how to manipulate channels for best effect.

I've found that the Readers' Reviews on Amazon's web site to be a fairly good indicator of the good, bad and indifferent when it comes to books.

Hope that helps,

John Wolff Hamilton, New Zealand

I just noticed that the subject line implies a somewhat broader question
than the text.

While it's not a book, there's a long list of pointers at
http://www.imaging-resource.com/BETTERPICS.HTM.

But then, there's a list of book reviews at
http://www.imaging-resource.com/IRNEWS/archive/irn-indx.htm#boo.

I've got the CS version of "Photoshop For Digital Photographers," and
it is really outstanding. Here's a link to the CS2 version:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321330625/qid=1133380149/sr=8-2/
ref=pd_bbs_2/102-1148432-1716140?n=507846&s=books&v=glance

However, this book assumes the reader is fluent in digital
photography techniques - it teaches Photoshop manipulation techniques
above and beyond what most PS "how to" books explain, and ignores the
stuff about typography, etc., that photographers won't need to know.

"Photoshop Masking & Compositing" is also excellent:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0735712794/qid=1133381181/sr=1-1/
ref=sr_1_1/102-1148432-1716140?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

"Getting It Printed: How to Work With Printers and Graphic Imaging
Services to Assure Quality, Stay on Schedule and Control Costs" is an
excellent book about dealing with professional imagesetters and
planning projects (prepress, choosing paper and ink, etc.):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1581805772/qid=1133380939/sr=2-1/
ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-1148432-1716140?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

Though I don't have a copy of this book, Katrin Eismann's other books
are so good, I feel confident to mention her "Real World Digital
Photography" book as well:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321223721/qid=1133381247/sr=1-4/
ref=sr_1_4/102-1148432-1716140?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
