Apple USB Modem for older Macs?

I know Apple USB Modem requires 10.4.3, but would it work on older Macs as well, as long as they have a USB port? It's hard to find any information about that.

Apple's web site is fairly clear that it won't, except in one place
where rather than listing the new modemless models it says "Macintosh
computer without built-in modem" (And 10.4.3, or the 10.4.almost3
that shipped with the new modemless Macs initially, which lets out
old enough modemless Macs.)

I'm not at all sure I believe the web site, however (I do see the
possibility of conflict between two modems, one the internal USB that
was used for a long time but not as recently as the original Mini,
and the other the external USB).

For $50 I'm not going to experiment.

I think the information on Apple's site (specifically AppleStore) is quite unclear about this...

Anyhow, I got this quote from another source who apparently is a developer with some insight in Apple's modems:

>Apple has recently introduced a new USB modem which is also based on
>the same Motorola SM56 unit found in recent Macs. The Apple USB modem
>is a small iPod-white-plastic dongle and it retails for 49 USD.
>Apple's driver for these modems is included in MacOS X 10.4.3. Any

>modems

We'll try it and see.
