Sleeping Hard Drives

The article on Hard Drive sleep issues in TidBITS#802/24-Oct-05
was very interesting especially the fact that one could
write an Applescript to modify the sleep issues. I am
looking for an Applescript that would force my external FireWire
hard drive to spin up at the same time my internal hard drive is
woken up from its sleep.

My current energy savings settings put my computer to sleep
after 15 minutes of inactivity. Presumably my external hard drive
spins down at the same time. In due course I awaken my internal hard
drive (which seems to take a long time) and begin to work. My
external hard drive remains asleep. Should I access something on my
external hard drive it will awaken (expected) but sometimes it
remains asleep until I open a file resident on my hard drives (.pdf
and occasionally .docs files opened from within their respective
application) and then I have the spinning beachball for what appears
to be a long time. So I would be interested in having my external
hard drive spin up when my internal hard drive spins up.

[I'm not sure about AppleScript, but you could probably do this with iKey, since you'd have a shortcut that woke up the external drive and was triggered by the wakeup event. -Adam]

Re: Sleeping Hard Drives

As far as I know, Cocktail allows you to set different spindown times
for every disk on your Mac...
