New video-capable iPod

I've just finished watching the webcast of the latest Apple Event (I wonder
if it'll be available as a podcast...), and I was struck quite strongly by
how careful Steve Jobs was to refer to the new iPod as "a music
player....and it happens to play video." It's interesting to see that
they're refusing to call this a "video iPod." Given that the computer
front-end for the 'pod is iTunes, not any other software, and Apple's source
for content is the iTunes Music Store, it's interesting to note that the
focus is very clearly on this being a music player which, almost apropos of
not a whole lot, just seems to happen to be able to play the odd video.

A few other things struck me about the show, too, apart from Steve's
haircut, which was there, presumably, solely to distract attention away from
Steve's trousers, which, I suspect, can be held directly responsible for
Apple's 10% share-price tumble yesterday.

No, I was more interested in the rather disappointing hard-disc capacity
that was being advertised for the new iMacs. How you're supposed to fit much
in the way of content on no more than 250MB is beyond me, but Steve did say
that h.246 is the ultimate in compression, so maybe that'll do it. And did
anyone notice the review that appeared on the U2 iTMS page that claimed to
be written by one "Paul Hewson?"

Right, then, I'll be off to the shop to buy my new 'pod. Oh, yes. I need
one. Not quite sure why I need one yet, but I know I need one.

Steve

Actually, it's 250GB (not 250MB), and upgradable to 500GB. Doesn't
seem too bad to me.

See, that's what I thought, too. But, according to the graphic that appeared
behind Steve's Haircut And Trousers, the new iMac has SATA hard discs that
hold either 160 or 250 Megabytes. Damn, even my first Mac, my old IIsi from
1995 or so, had that much space.

I was *very* surprised that an error like this passed Steve's scrutiny. I
can only assume that *somebody* has been executed in Cupertino by now. But
don't take my word for it ‹ take a look at the video. About 19 minutes in is
where Steve starts listing the new eMacs' specs, and, just to be helpful,
I'm attaching a screenshot (and hoping that Adam will let it through).

[Nope. The screenshot got chopped by the software before it hit the queue. -Andrew ]

I'm shocked, SHOCKED, to find out that marketing was occurring at this Apple event!

I have a neighbor with a brand new iPod, but he has a PowerMac G4
(450MHz, AGP). No USB2.

Does anyone know or can they recommend a USB2 PCI card that works
with such a machine and is still sold?

What if someone has a Cube? Anyone know if there is USB2 to Firewire 400
device that allows firewire to be used with a new iPod on the slotless Cube?

I received a new iPod for my birthday (thanks kids!). We use the
"desk lamp" iMac in our kitchen as the music server/repository for
our family.

I searched for such a device and the closest thing I found was from
Macally (note to self: rhymes with back-alley), listed as a "USB2.0
and FireWire Combo Hub." This statement was displayed at the top of
the product's web page...

"Recommended for : Ideal for white iMacs and OS X who wants high speed USB2.0"

A blurb at the end also added...

"* To obtain USB2.0 Hi-Speed performance in OS 10.1, USB2.0 host
controller and drivers supporting USB2.0 hub are required"

Since I'm using 10.3 I figured I was set--USB2.0 all the way. I
purchased the unit from SmallDog, received it and then discovered the
horrible truth--no USB2 for me! The manual plainly states that the
host Mac must provide a USB2.0 port.

<http://www.macally.com/spec/firewire/connecting/hub_uf.html>

After that episode, I inquired on Apple's Discussion List as well but
the consensus is that no such device exists. I feel that such a
device can be built but it was pointed out to me that the cost would
be higher than most people would be willing to pay because a CPU is
needed to arbitrate the USB traffic.
