Activation in Adobe CS2

[Woolley, Darren]Darren Woolley - 07:10am Oct 11, 2005 PST

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of the activation process in the Adobe Creative Suite 2?

I've checked licence agreements in the past with both Quark and Adobe products, and it was within licence boundaries to install a copy of these products in two machines, in the case that both were used by a single user, and that the products weren't active at the same time.

This applied specifically in the case of having a desktop and a laptop, and a good example is if you're a designer that does some work from home.

Now that activation is applied to Adobe products, does this double-install still work?

I installed Macromedia's Studio MX 2004 a few months ago on my work machine and my laptop, and it activated fine for both, under the same licence 'understanding'....

Feedback would be appreciated.

I use CS2 just like this (desktop and laptop) and it works fine. I believe Adobe's license permits no
more than two computers, however.

The one thing that worries me is that it sounds like with CS2 Adobe's gone to an activation system
that's similar to iTunes music: once you've activated CS2 on a machine, you have to deactivate it
before you can move it to another machine (i.e. Adobe will let you install on two machines, but
before you can go to the third you must deactivate one of the others). This can be a problem if you
have a machine die or you sell it and forget to deactivate it.

So far it's too new for the deactivation to be a problem for me yet, but I have run into problems
with iTunes music (I upgraded my computer's hard drive and forgot to deactivate iTunes, wasting one
of my activations), so I'm leary of too many programs using this strategy.

I use CS2 on two computers, the limit permitted by the license. The deactivation and activation process is incredibly easy: Just go into any of the CS2 applications and choose Help > Transfer Activation. It takes about 2 seconds. (If you don't have an Internet connection, you can call a free 800 number to transfer activation.)

If you were in the situation where a machine dies, you can call Customer Support at Adobe.
