XPostFacto 4 experiences

Has anyone tried this product from Other World
Computing? Is there any hope that a 7500 w/a 604
400 mhz daughtercard would run Tiger in a manner
to make it worth the effort?

I have used XPostFacto for quite a while (since before the author
teamed up with Other World Computing - I think he was a student at the
University of Toronto) to run Mac OS X on a PowerMac 8600, first with the
stock 604e CPU, and then with an upgraded 400 MHz G4. In the spring I
finally bought a G5 (dual 2.7 GHz - why doesn't it feel seven or more times
faster?). It worked great for me, and gave my system an extra five (!)
years of useful life - but I never tried using more than Mac OS X 10.2.8.

Unfortunately for Dan, the page referenced states: "Mac OS X 10.3
(and later) require a G3 or G4 CPU upgrade on models that did not
originally come with a G3 or G4." It should work to run 10.1 on the 7500
(acutally you need to use XPostFacto 3.1), but not the more recent versions
of Mac OS X.

Re: XPostFacto 4 experiences

Tiger, Panther or Jaguar all require a G3 or G4 Processor to run, not a
604. An upgrade card with a G3 or G4 will work in these machines and
will allow XPost Facto to install the OS. Memory will be another issue,
as OSX needs lots of it, and some memory that has worked in OS9
computers may not perform to OSX specs. Most of the information you
desire is on the OWC website under OSX. In addition, there is a "for
pay" forrum that allows you to post specific questions. Paul C

Re: XPostFacto 4 experiences

I used XPostFacto to install Panther on a Beige G3 233hz at our Design studio. We're using it as a Headless FTP server, as well as a MP3 Jukebox via Deadend Software's WebRemote so anyone (Mac or PC) can control the Music-Server-Jukebox via WebRemotes Web interface. We can select Podcasts, Internet Radio, or any of the 2,500 tracks on the server.

If I remember correctly, XPostFacto was a bit fidgety to install initially (although mostly due to the monitor being connected via a third party PCI video card), but Panther installed without incident. So far, it's been running 24/7 and is rock solid. The newer version of XPostFacto is even simpler to use - I recommend it if you can get a G3 upgrade.

"FireWire target disk mode" is a hardware feature that allows a
computer to essentially act as a very expensive external FireWire hard
drive. XPostFacto should work just as well with such an external FireWire
hard drive as it does with any other external FireWire hard drive.

Many of the machines that XPostFacto comes with do not have
built-in FireWire, and thus cannot boot from FireWire hard drives and
cannot themselves be booted into FireWire target disk mode - Apple has a
list of machines with this capability. XPostFacto does not have any effect
of if a computer can boot into FireWire target disk mode.

"How to use FireWire target disk mode"

If a computer has more than one internal hard drives, I am not sure
which one or ones will be accessible when in FireWire target disk mode.
