Popup Dock and Dock Enhancers

Hello all,

I am never inclined to write about things that I have bought for my
Mac because they are usually misleading and sometimes come from
unreliable sources.

However, here I am, making a testimonial for a program that I have
found to be indispensable to my Mac usage. This program is called
Popup Dock.

When I first bought it, it was a bit buggy and i have been in
constant communication with Nathan who is its author. Now, after a
bit of time, it is now bug free and I can't get it to crash for the
life of me!

Here is how it works:

This is an app/preference pane program. You set up whatever number of
docks that you wish to have. In my case, I have seven: Utilities,
Applications, Internet, Video, Music, Graphics and Games. Programs
that I have categorized for each are placed in them just like you
would do with the standard dock that comes with the OS. What is nice
about them is that I have them set up to "disappear." I have three on
the right edge, three on the left edge, and one on the bottom next to
the original dock. Whenever I want an application or document (Yes, I
even have database files in my docks so that I never have to look for
them any more!), I move my mouse to the proper area, the dock pops
out across the screen, and then I select my application or document
that I want. When I move the mouse off of the particular dock, it
slides back to the side where it came from. This has saved me a lot
of time and effort. I never have to go to the Applications folder
anymore and work my way to an app that I want to run. I don't have to
look for documents that I repeatedly use (templates, databases, etc).
Also, it is Apple Scriptable.

The cost for this app is $20 and worth every cent.

Do note that DragThing does all this and more (and has been around for ten
years, during all of which time it has been repeatedly reviewed in TidBITS).
Not only is DragThing the Dock done right, but in fact the Dock was sort of
based on DragThing.

Re: Popup Dock and Dock Enhancers

After a long period using drag thing, I found out a small app called
quicksilver that definitely made me forget all those dock
replacements and evene the dock itself!

After activating its bezel interface with a user definable hotkey,
you start typing the name of the app you're looking for and..."boom!"
here you are! This is really, really Apple!

...it doesn't eat up much memory and leaves my tiny 12"
uncluttered...thank you Quicksilver!

Do note that Drop Drawers does even more and is cheaper than DragThing,
too. Go catch 'em all! :-)

Can you drag and drop things onto the bezel?

Yes, you absolutely can. In fact, Quicksilver takes this functionality even
further, allowing you to create sentence-like (subject-verb-object) commands
with more or less everything it can access.

For example, if you have a text file on your desktop, you can invoke
Quicksilver and then drag it to the bezel or even tell QS to grab the
current finder selection.

Then you can tell QS to perform a specific action, like Open With. Having
selected that 'verb,' Quicksilver will present you with a list of relevant
objects, such as Microsoft Word, Text Edit, BBEdit, etc. Choosing one of
those will perform that action that you've just constructed.

Merlin Mann has written fairly extensively on how powerful this program is
at his excellent Getting Things Done-themed site:

http://www.43folders.com/quicksilver/

I'm in agreement with him that Quicksilver is much more powerful and mature
than an application launcher -- in fact, I use DragThing as well as
Quicksilver, and find them complementary in many ways.

After reading all the posts in this thread I downloaded the various
applications mentioned to have a play. I have found Drop Drawers to
be the best of the lot and have just recently purchased a full
version after my demo expired. I have 6 "drawers" down the side of
my screen, set to hide when not in use, for various different
categories (App, Games etc) and now have less then 10 "essential"
items on my dock, most of which are startup items anyway. It makes
working with OS X so much more efficient because the dock is no
longer massive and shows mostly running applications.

Thanks heaps for the suggestion

Jason
