Mounting MP3 players in Mac OS X

For various reasons I bought a MamboX Jukebox MP3 player/recorder a couple of years ago, as it suited my needs better than an iPod.

Under Mac OS 9 it appears on the desktop as an untitled disk. When I switched to Mac OS X, on the same computer it didn't show up at all - the screen indicated activity, but nothing was accesible from the computer - which could see it if switched to start up in OS 9. Under 10.3 it is seen as attached to the USB in system profiler - but not on the desktop.

If I hook my powerbook g3 (OS 9) to the network, and then mount the player to the powerbook, when I connect to the powerbook from the OS X machine to the powerbook, the player is available as a disk, along with the main drive. I can then access it from OS X and move, copy, delete etc.

My preference would be to get to it directly from the OS X machine.

Any ideas or hints as to where I could look?

Jeremy

I've seen the same thing happen with certain USB flash drives on my G5. Some
will mount fine, others seem to just be ignored, although the system does
know that it's there, because if I plug it into the keyboard, it complains
about there not being enough power. It's very annoying. I'm guessing that
they (and your device) are just slightly "off" in terms of strict USB
compliance or something, and Apple has implemented a very strict USB stack
(it wouldn't be the first time that Apple has done something like this). I
suspect therefore that Apple's response would be "your device is
non-compliant", or something similarly useful :(

Have you checked Preferences in the Finder?

Under "Show these items on the Desktop", make sure the "Hard disks" and "CDs, DVDs and iPods" boxes are ticked.

Note: the wording is per Tiger; Panther may be a bit different, but the same principle applies.

When you plug it in to your machine booted in OS X, can you see it in
Disk Utility? If so, is the 'Mount' button available in the toolbar
at the top, and, if so, can you click on it (make certain you've
selected the correct volume in the sidebar)?

I seem to have had this problem eons ago (so it's *really* difficult
for me to remember), and it seems like once I mounted it through Disk
Utility it mounted ever after just by plugging it in. Just can't
remember for sure, though. HTH.
