Re: Segway sightings
When I was in San Francisco for MacWorld this year I used to see a guy going down O'Farrell st near Union Square on quite a few days. He seemed to be going to do his daily shopping as I also saw him heading back with some groceries on one day.

No, he must do the Szechuan death march at Genghis Kahn, then Curryrama at
Swagats.

Oh! and I forgot to say I went on a tour of San Francisco on Segways. The tour lasted three hours including half an hour or so of tuition. It was one of the most fun things I've ever done and was very good value for money $65.

Does sound like fun but why do I get this sudden vision of a re-shoot of
the car chase from Bullitt?

Re: Segway sightings
Segways seem to be standard operating equipment for the "park rangers" on Chicago's lakeshore. One can rent them in the new Millenium Park.

Re: Segway sightings
I actually got to ride one last summer. A group of friends go camping every year and a couple of the guys there had worked for the company that made them. One guy brought one in his van and let us all tool around the camp ground on it. Good Times!

Re: Segway sightings
I was in Monterey, CA for a wedding. While walking along the paved path by the Bay, I saw a group of four people on segways speeding along.
It looked like they were all rental units.

Re: Segway sightings
I have seen a young man a couple of times on a Segway going down Mitchell Street in Ithaca (NY). Maybe if he reads this, he will tell us where he goes.

Re: Segway sightings
Segway's are still pretty pricy items. I've seen people on them a few
times near my job here on the expensive Upper East Side of Manhattan,
but nowhere else. I've even seen one guy crash his (he was old, but
didn't seem to be hurt. Bumped a mailbox, not a car or person).
Kewl little things. I'm suprised no one's opened up a "Rent a Segway"
here by now.

Somehow, I don't see it happening in the wintertime there :-)

Re: Segway sightings
I just went to Vilnius, Lithuania (One of the Baltic States in
Northern Europe) on holiday. As Lithuania was part of the Soviet
Union until 1991, I was pleasantly surprised to see not only the city
flourishing, but also a tourist guide consisting of two Segways
strolling around the old city center. (I think it said 47 Euros or
Dollars for the tour.)
My hotel had free WIFI, and I noted - again to my pleasant surprise -
that the only other Laptop apart from my AlBook that I saw during my
stay there, was a TiBook :-)

In Montréal's Old Port there is such an outfit. But because Segways are not
allowed on the road in Canada you can only stay on the waterfront sidewalks.

Re: Segway sightings
I take it that you can “drive” these right into stores or offices or other places of business?
What’s the footprint- about 1’ x 2’ - i.e. Small enough to park beside your desk at work?
For those of you who have tried them, did they take a good measure of fine control because they were so sensitive to the shift of your body weight?
I love the idea of renting them, kind of like Zip cars, but imagine the liability may be a little different.
The idea of use for city tours is great too.

Re: Segway sightings
I found that the fine control was OK for going down footpaths, but I wouldn't want to try maneuvering it in a large group of people. It took half an hour or so to learn how to use it.

Re: Segway sightings
There is a "segway tour" business that operates here in
Minneapolis - $60 gets you 2+ hours on a Segway as you see
a guided tour of the historic mill operations on the edges
of the Mississippi River. (the tour is pretty interesting,
the 7 mile path you follow is VERY scenic, but it's really all
about riding the Segway of course)
I have taken the tour a couple of times (when I've had out of
town visitors and I wanted to do something fun and unique)
and in talking to the owners it sounds like the business is
doing well. (and it's inspired other tour operations in
other cities)
http://www.magicalhistorytour.com
But I did also hear that the segway retail business isn't doing
so hot in general - the Minnesota dealer had to close and this
tour company now deals with the Iowa dealer.

Re: Segway sightings
Segway of Los Angeles is actually in Santa Monica, in a storefront above the beach (just above the expensive hotels).
Rental rates are $75/2hrs, and we see them fairly often just cruising along in the “wheels” lane on the boardwalk between Santa Monica Pier and Venice (bikes, skates, skateboards, no runners or pedestrians).
<http://www.segway.la/rental.php>
Despite the admonition that renters must wear helmets, I’ve never seen a helmeted Segway pilot.
A google search (segway “santa monica”) shows that they are frequently bundled in tourist packages.

Re: Segway sightings
There's now a film about two guys who rode Segways from Seattle to
Boston, which is a tad nutty. Sounds like they are currently shopping
it to some film festivals. The trailer is here:
http://www.10mph.com
Here in Washington, DC, there is at least one Segway tour company:

Re: Segway sightings
Not really expecting anyone to see this TWO years later, BUT... To John C Welch and Harmon Abrahamson -- the segway sighted near Popplers in Grand Forks was indeed ridden in the winter. North Dakotans may have seen that person wearing a painters face shield and a very very heavy coat making them look like a space cadet, but the Segway did indeed do well in the harsh Dakota winter. I spent my first year of college at UND but eventually moved back to NY, and I had to sell the segway after running low on money, but I do plan to get another one, eventually. Also, the Segway population on the East side of Manhattan is growing. The first person to own one in the entire city actually works at the skate rink at Rockefeller Plaza, but the big Segway activist for NY is Itsi (Edwin) Atkins, and he does indeed run a Segway tour now (though not the same as a rental -- there still isn't affirmative legal legislation for non-handicapped people in the city. http://www.segwaynyc.com/ http://media.www.dakotastudent.com/media/storage/paper970/news/2005/01/25/Sectionslife/Forget.Walking.Segway.Is.The.Way-1771444.shtml

They had a segway store in the uber-money shopping area in Kansas City.
Evidently, you cannot stay in business when the only time people use your
product is to tour said area. It closed.
