Regional Macworld Shows
via email
> I'd encourage IDG World Expo to consider replicating the concept
of a small regional show in a variety of cities.
If I recall correctly, that concept was officially presented, and a
number of smaller shows announced, at a panel discussion during
MacWorld Expo San Francisco in January of this year. Apparently,
these shows have not been scheduled yet, but it would, indeed, be an
interesting approach. As Adam has pointed out, it would surely
provide more potential than trying desperately to keep the all-too-
intimate show in Boston alive in its current form.
[You're thinking o Macworld On Tour, which never happened, though interestingly, I also commented about this need for regional shows after the last New York expo... -Adam]

However, I see one critical issue in the quality of the events
program that is scheduled around such smaller shows. Apart from the
Jobs-blessed AppleExpo Paris, most European shows like MacExpo London
and MacExpo Cologne also have a rather small(ish) and regional feel
to them. But the worst bit is that most of these shows' conference
sessions cater to a more or less entry-level audience, even though
they do feature well-known speakers like Andy Ihnatko, Chris Breen,
and others.
Don't get me wrong: the speakeres are just as entertaining and
inspiring in these sessions as in any you could attend at MWSF. It's
just that _what_ they present is usually not as in-depth, as
demanding, or has hard-core as the topics found at Moscone in
January. It would be great if show organizers would make sure they'd
also provide a few master-class-like sessions that really deserve
that moniker, and are not just another overly broad overview over the
topic at hand.
Some of the pro-Audio stuff shown at MWSF 2005 was an indication for
what such a class could look like. To give an example of what I,
personally, would like to see: _not_ "Look, this is how you record a
guitar in GarageBand," but "Have I shown you my EVOC vocoder setup
using this awesome, out-of-this-world Sculpture sound as carrier,
yet?! Here it is. And this is how you can polish it even further with
the Space Designer plug-in..." ;)
