Changing the FTP Server on Tiger
rross - 07:04am Jun 7, 2005 PSTGuys .. I'm going to retire my Windows based FTP server (G6FTP w/capabilities for anti-hammering, virtual directores and user/group aliases) and looking for a suitable replacement for the Mac .. Is tnftpd the server of choice? or should I be looking somewhere else?
[Glenn writes a lot about PureFTPd in "Take Control of Sharing Files in Tiger" - that's where I'd recommend starting. -Adam]
Thanks
Richard

vsftpd is supposed to be one of the most secure FTP servers around. Not
sure it
has all the features you're looking for though.
Darwin Ports has it for Mac OS X (including Tiger)

If you are insistent on running ftp (a bad idea when there is ssh,
sco, and sftp, I think) then it really depends on what you want.
If your needs are fairly straightforward (shell users login to
restricted space) then the built in ftp in OSX is fine. If you nee
more complexity (virtual users, multiple layers of restriction, etc)
then you might look at something like ncftpd or ProFTPd, amongst others.
I haven't kept up on the ftp servers, but I recall ProFTPd being very
configurable, if a pain.

Re: Changing the FTP Server on Tiger
The best FTP server I've used on OSX is Rumpus FTP. There are 2 levels of product and they simply work. They are very secure. http://www.maxum.com/Rumpus/
