Tiger's Preview annoyances

I have tried to find a work-around to an annoyance in Tiger's version
of Preview, but so far haven't managed to find a simple way to do
what was a simple action in Panther's version of Preview.

I am talking about the ability to view a PDF page full screen. In
previous incarnations of Preview it was possible to do by selecting
fullscreen from the view menu.

Since the introduction of the Slideshow feature in Tiger, the
fullscreen option has disappeared.

Of course I can select the Slideshow option, but there are a couple
of irritations that stop me being able to use it to read a PDF document.

To stop the default display of the next page after a few seconds, you
have to press the pause button on the slideshow" dashboard-like"
controls. then in order to see the document you have to use a single
mouse-click somewhere on the PDF document in order for the controls
to disappear, after that it is easy to use the arrow keys to move
through the document as I am used to.

I would like to see preference for the slideshow feature from within
each application that uses it, since obviously a slideshow from
pictures I got as an email attachment will require different settings
than for reading a document in PDF format. At the very least it
should be possible to change the settings globally through a
slideshow preference pane.

Francis

Given Preview's inability to display PDF layers correctly (sorry, no
reference...I *think* it was MacInTouch), I would suggest using Adobe Reader
for PDF. I've made that change to the open with global setting for .pdf
files.

For that matter, I'm not thrilled by Safari's new-found ability to show PDF
in-line. Almost always, when I encounter PDF on a web site, I'd prefer to
download it and read it later. And, since Preview has trouble getting the
display right, one has to wonder about Safari.

Re: Tiger's Preview annoyances

Tiger's Preview is bothering me too - it used to be that our ebooks
would open in a window that was the right size to show as much of the
page as possible. Now, however, I'm having trouble even predicting
how Preview will open a PDF; it often puts huge gray bars on either
side of the page.

Has anyone figured out the relationship of of the Default Document
Scale options in Preview's preferences, and the Automatically Resize
setting in the View menu? For what it's worth, all of these files
are set (in Acrobat) to Fit Page, with the Resize Window to Initial
View checkbox set.

cheers... -Adam

Preview no longer plays animated gifs from our Windows cousins, either.  One has to view them in a browser.

Re: Tiger's Preview annoyances

This calling Preview instead of Acrobat is a real pain, especially as I use .pdf for commercial, interactive, tutorial texts which have to open in Preview. The way round it is to go to the Get Info window & tell the file that it may only open with Acrobat, or Reader.

Its a pity that the export feature has been "dumbed down" to a slider with no preview. In fact "Export" has disappeared altogether and has been replaced with "Save As". It seems that Tiger has brought a whole new meaning to the old adage of, "If it works, don't fix it."

I recommend the outstanding PDF Browser Plug-in.

Re: Tiger's Preview annoyances

I have a totally different problem with Preview- and as I have not been able to find anyone else reporting this- I thought I might try here- perhaps some problem with my install?

I have installed Tiger – wiped the drive and reinstalled everything.
The install went very well- and my computer certainly was helped by the spring cleaning I gave it.

However, ever since upgrading, Preview has not worked well- in a very specific way.
About 90% (but not all) of the images I view in preview have vertical black stripes in them- some regular intervals- some at irregular intervals, looking a bit like a barcode.

The images are fine- I open them in graphicconverter and they look fine
I have not yet had the problem with PDF’s – but have gotten it with jpeg, tiff and GIF files.

Any thoughts on what this could be?
I tried to reinstall just the preview app off the Tiger install CD–but that did not fix the problem.
I thought it might be something in the display engine, but
I do not have a similar problem in Safari – I can open the jpeg in safari and it looks normal.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Solutions?

Thanks
-Dave

Preview has printing problems too. When I get incoming faxes, they are multi-page TIFF files.Preview will display them, but will only print the first page. So I changed the default application for these files to GraphicConverter.

Something you could try and which worked for me is: Go to page set up and choose A4 but scroll to A4 (Small), if that is an option for your printer. Replace with US equivalents if relevant. I found that by doing this I got multi-pages printed whereas with just A4 only I just got the first page.

Re: Tiger's Preview annoyances

I have been working on a pdf based multimedia project for distribution found out about preview being the default application doesn't allow any embedded quicktime movies to play. Even if i were not to embed the movies but link to them to open i a seperate player, the "full screen" mode in preview prevents the link from working.

anyone have an answer to this problem. It's a big bummer.

One thing, for what it's worth to anyone. I have been trying to figure out how to keep a pdf from opening in preview on other users computers without having to tell them to change their default application. What I have learned so far is that any file I exported to pdf with version 6 (1.5) compatibility and did not optimize for fast web view, it seems to keep the reader program as the default application even on others computers.

I may be wrong, i am in the middle of trying to figure it out. If i am wrong please tell me.

This is a good example of why Apple's move towards just using file
extensions is a step backward. (I recognise that now there's a
potential move towards a combination of UTI's and bundle identifiers,
which would be a step forward.)

Anyway, simple answer to your question: set the type of the file to
'PDF ' (no quotes, but note the space after the 'F') and set the
creator of your file to 'CARO'. The file will always open in Acrobat
Reader if it's available, but would still fall back to Preview if
Reader isn't on the recipient's computer.

If you need help setting the type and creator, contact me off list.

Re: Tiger's Preview annoyances

A separate issue I have with updated Preview is with multi-page .tif
documents from my US partner's fax provider. They used to open up
beautifully in Preview and print properly etc. Now with the new
Preview I can only see the first page of the documents.

The service he uses is Packetel's pfax. It doesn't provide a Mac
client and they have a page that lists several apps to use if you're a
Mac user but most of them won't run on a current Mac (Classic apps)
and of those that do, they don't support multi-page tif docs either.

Does someone have a solution to this issue ? (I tried using my efax
client to open the document I received from pfax and I get a garbage
image, the right number of pages but just static).

[Try GraphicConverter - it can usually handle multi-page TIFFs. -Adam]

Are you sure?. I have TIFFs multipage and Preview show the images
when I open the drawer and click in the first icon.

My own solution to this is an Applescript that I activate using iKey.
Although any Applescript launcher would work.

Essentially:
--start
set topLeft to {0, 0}
set winSize to {2000, 1500}

tell application "System Events" to tell process "Preview"
tell front window
set position to topLeft
set size to winSize
end tell

try
click menu item "Zoom To Fit" of menu 1 of menu bar item "View" of menu bar 1
end try
end tell
--end

topleft & winSize need to be edited to fit your front window. Although
more advanced can get their own screen resolutions using the command:
do shell script "system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType | grep Resolution"
