Cheap Wireless Headphone Solution

Has anyone tried this cheaper alternative for Wireless headphones?

1) A small FM transmitter unit like the Airplay:

2) A pair of FM stereo headphones:

It's not a crazy $200 Bluetooth solution, but it does get rid of the
wires. I'm planning on trying this combo out for my 4th gen/20GB, but I
was wondering if anyone else had tried this.

If you do this, make sure to get headphones with a good FM tuner. I had some wireless
headphones once where the tuner would drift off the frequency every 10 minutes or so,
making it unusable. To make matters worse, the transmitter had a 'gate' function,
switching off when the signal fell below a certain level.
Also, wireless headphones tend to be heavy due to the need for batteries.

Re: Cheap Wireless Headphone Solution

I use FM wireless in a slightly different way. I purchased a wireless
FM transmitter from CCrane.com and use it to transmit ALL of my
computer audio throughout the house. Naturally, I use it mostly for
iTunes music, although it's fun to have the email sound come through
over my music, announcing that a new mail message has arrived! So, on
the back porch or in the pool I listen to an iTunes playlist. If I come
into the living room I listen on my Bose WaveRadio to the same music
and, in the family room I listen still via the home stereo system
that's also connected to my TV. Back in the den where the computer is
located the computer speakers provide the same music. I don't miss a
beat with this system, and it's completely wireless. Oh, the garage has
a 70s vintage stereo system so I can also listen out there when working
on a project in the front of my house. No earbuds!

Lately, I've tried a strange but workable combo: hook the iPod Shuffle
to the FM transmitter. I had thought of putting this in a small,
bicycle-mounted satchel with an FM headphone set to listen to music
while riding the bike. The same setup could work fine with a fanny pack
while walking or running. As an amateur radio operator I do all of this
mainly because I can, and to see how well it works. Wireless is the way
to go!

By the way, when in the den my wireless FM transmitter runs on an
external power brick to save on batteries, and I've used alligator
clips and an external FM antenna to extend the range. At one point I
created a homebrew antenna mounted on the roof and was able to pick up
my FM station about 1/4 mile away down at the end of my street! This
little transmitter works quite well for under $70.

This is an interesting, alternative solution although I'd like more info
on the headphones than this page provides:

Re: Cheap Wireless Headphone Solution

I recently asked a similar question from a PowerBook discussion group (and other places). The only difference being I want very good sounding headphones. Two were recommended: Sony SRF-HM01V Sports headphones and Peltor 90545 Worktunes. I have not tried them. Let me know how they sound if you try them. jtbchem.csustan.edu
