Getting Tiger

[jwblist]jwblist - 06:26pm Mar 28, 2005 PST

Just FYI from the shameless commerce division: Amazon has changed the game with a $35 rebate on Tiger ($50 on the family pack) for orders placed by May 31. Order date matters, ship date doesn't. Print out the coupon now (before they pull it).

You should be careful about printing out or saving the rebate form
now. When placing the order, check that the product number you are
buying matches the number that qualifies for the rebate.

IIRC, Amazon offered a rebate when Panther came out, but pulled it.
At the same time, the product number for Panther changed, so
technically the thing people ordered didn't match the (pulled) rebate
form, and Amazon refused to honor the rebate. (At least initially, I
don't remember what the ultimate outcome was.)

Anyone else able to find the Family Pack deal? I sure can't.

Both the individual and the family pack were on the rebate coupon as I
downloaded and printed it. There is a checkbox for each product on the
form.

Amazon is calling the individual item B0002G71T0 (round things are zeros)
and the family pack B0007LW1MW (round things zeros, vertical thing one).

Not needing a family pack, I didn't look for a place to order it.

A placeholder is on Amazon's site but it's listed as "currently not available."

Amazon.co.uk does not seem to have any 10.4 software at all listed.
Amazon.ca doesn't have the $35 discount, but claims to be only $130 CDN,
which at current exchange rates is is about $106 US, compared to $95 US
with the discount from amazon.com - but you can't actually order it as
there is no "pre-order" button.

The rebate PDF linked from the Mac OS X page above has a checkbox
for the $50 family pack rebate. The Mac OS X Family Pack page does not seem
to have the link to the rebate, or pricing, or the ability to preorder.
Amazon.ca and amazon.co.uk do not seem to have the family pack listed at
all:

Because that Rebate Form lists the Tiger Family Pack as well as the single
license version, I asked how I could pre-order it. Herewith the Amazon

Tiger Family Pack is up on the Amazon site, for pre-order, w/the $50
rebate, estimating ship date of June 17, which is slightly odd, given that
Apple announced that Tiger goes on sale April 29.

It's now been changed to 5/3.

Re: Getting Tiger

I ordered Tiger from Amazon back on March 30. On the page where you order Tiger, it says "This item will be released on April 29, 2005. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives."

But on the page where you can check on the status of your orders, they are estimating a ship date of June 3 - 6.

I *presume* this is just a leftover from when the ship date was estimated at "first half of 2005" and somebody picked a date out of the air, but if this is true that they are not shipping Tiger until June, I am cancelling my order and ordering from Smalldog or MacSomewhereOrOther that can deliver in a more timely fashion (being the immediate gratification junkie that I am)...

Anybody know the real scoop?

It's quite likely that it's leftover, but...

It's also likely that Amazon doesn't know how quickly Apple will ship how
many copies to them (my own suspicion is that Apple will direct the
production house to drop-ship a significant number to Amazon and others with
large order backlogs...it's cheaper for Apple that way).

If you miss a shipping projection by a certain amount, you must notify the
(US) customers (and the FTC levies HUGE fines for failing to do so). It's
easier and safer to be conservative.

I still get "Delivery estimate: May 2, 2005" -- but I bumped up my
order to next-day shipping because I'm really, really impatient! (But
even before I did that, I think it was still scheduled to arrive in
early May.) You might try changing your shipping options, than changing
them back, just to see what happens.

Amazon has changed my order to indicate arrival by 5 May, I took the
free shipping for my family pack. This would indicate shipping around
29 or 30th of April

We just realized that if you haven't yet ordered Tiger, you can get
"Take Control of Upgrading to Tiger" for with it for free. Just
pre-order the ebook, click the Check for Updates button in your
pre-order copy to find a coupon code worth $5 off at Small Dog
Electronics, and then use the coupon when you buy Tiger from Small
Dog.

If you're really really impatient, you pay list price at the Apple online
store (which last I looked was still "guaranteeing" delivery by April 29, or
at the Tiger party 6pm April 29 at your "nearby" Apple retail store.

And likely other Apple retailers...I did Panther at the very well organized
party at what was then The Computer Store in Seattle (now The Mac Store).
That was the 11PM release...the store was accepting payments throughout the
evening, and when 11PM came you handed in the appropriate paper from the
sale and they handed you Panther.

This is the first Mac OS X update I haven't been that anxious to obtain.
Panther is working just fine for me, and the company now has a tech support
guy who will be putting Tiger on a new Mini we bought for him, right away.
I can wait for the goodies. (When it does come, I won't be installing it
until early in a weekend, anyhow...I need this machine to earn paychecks.
And maybe not the first weekend I have it in hand.)

If they can manage Harry Potter releases with aplomb, then why not
Tiger? As wonderful and devoted as Mac users might be, we are dwarfed
by the minions of wizardom.

Re: Getting Tiger

Sometime in the last day or so Amazon updated the ship dates, as many of you have noticed. Mine said June 3-5. I tried updating my shipping options to next day, and for $22 that still only bumped it up to June 2.

So I canceled the order and ordered it from the Apple store to be delivered April 29, free shipping (but you pay sales tax, so it's a wash...)
