Turbo Tax problems

[bobcon]bobcon (apparently) - 03:14pm Mar 18, 2005 PST

I am an 83 year old trying to learn the tricks required to do ordinary
tasks on my new G-5. Over the past 6 years, I have used Turbo Tax for
Mac my income Tax preparer and it worked fine. This year I ordered
Turbo Tax direct from Intuit for $43 including shipping. I should have
felt that some thing was not right when the Bonus CD's were for PC's.

I was able to prepare my 2004 Federal income tax. Fortunately I had
the presence of mind to make a couple of copies of the prepared tax.
At that point I tried to download the Arizona income Tax program. After
several tries, Intuit Sent me the Arizona Income tax information with
a 24 hour deadline to use it or lose it. I then learned that it had to
be installed in the 2004 Tax program.

Even though it appears in a on the Hard drive in a couple of places as
2004 Income Tax in several places on OS-X. When Clicked on it opens in
Preview and will not do anything else,

I think that at this point I went to ''Find". I was surprised to find
that even though I thought that I was doing my Taxes in OS-X. I have
never knowingly used OS-9 since I bought this G-5 . I was really
surprised when the finder told me that that my 2004 Tax program was now
in OS-9. I called Apples support line and was told that this was not an
Apple problem and would not tell me how to get these files transfered
from OS-9 to OS-X. To contact Turbo Tax . Turbo Tax does not respond to
my request. The end result is that I can not open it in OS-X. Can
someone give me a simple solution to this problem. The State tax folder
that is in OS-X will not open until I get the the Federal Tax folder
out of OS-9 back into OS-X where it should have been all along.

Complications are not needed by an almost as old as dirt mind. I hope
some one can give me a simple solution to this problem. Thank You

I am running an iMac G4 Flat Screen with OSX 3.9 and attempting to use Turbo Tax Deluxe 2005.

I have successfully completed downloading my Pa. State Forms and completed my 2005 Federal Returns. At the end  of the program and before filing electronically you are asked to go to one click dates and update TT 2005 before filing.  It appears the downloads are successful, then OSX prompts to copy the downloads to TT. This is where the error occurs.

I have tried 3 times to complete this task, but each time is RATS,"the error message  indicates a problem with file 11002:2-14" I did some researching on the TT Forum and found a message posting that states that TT is aware and of problem and is working on a fix,  No date is posted.

They have now posted a fix, which I successfully used last night to get things working again. Here’s a link:

<https://support1.turbotax.com/cgi-bin/turbotax.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1206>

Another forum suggested a lengthy process of trashing and reinstallation, followed by manual updates. This method created other problems with TT, so I don’t recommend it.

Re: Turbo Tax problems

I too have had problems with TT Deluxe and OS X 10.4.4. To file electronically, says I have to "fix error". To do that, says to use "one click update". When I do that, it says my TT is up to date. But I still cannot transmit electronically.

2 calls to tech support have been fruitless. One of the support staff didn't know anything about the product at all. His final suggestion was to uninstall and reinstall. At this point, I will return the product and definitely not purchase any further versions of their software.

Carrolynn,

The most probable reason you can’t file is because not all the forms have been finalized. The one that is holding me up is Form 2210 which figures out if you owe a penalty or not. There are half a dozen other forms that are yet to come.

The schedule can be found here:

<https://support1.turbotax.com/cgi-bin/turbotax.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?&p_faqid=1108>. Right now it says Feb 17 is the earliest I can expect to file.

It’s not all TurboTax’s fault, you know. Congress and the IRS are responsible for most of the delay in getting the guidance out. TT coders have to wait on them before they can do their thing.

Re: Turbo Tax problems

Well, it's February 17, and my Turbo Tax 2005 still "opens and unexpectedly closes" after I tried to update the forms on my 10.4.4 Mac G4. Two calls to tech support and their suggestions were not useful. Using Disk Utility solved nothing. The "Locker" they suggested I download to unlock files didn't unlock some, and these now do not empty from the trash to fully uninstall / remove TT2005 from my computer. Any suggestions for getting TT2005 to work? Any suggestions for getting rid of the TT2005 debris in the trash?

Just now (18 Feb, 5pm PST) I installed Turbo Tax 2005 from the CD (to
my 10.4.5 Mac G4), launched it, and allowed it to proceed with the
One Click Update. It downloaded some stuff, then crashed. I
relaunched it, did the One Click Update again, and everything seems
to have gone fine, including the auto-running of various updaters.

I imagine that it was the just-try-again that made it work, though I
suppose it's possible that updating last night to 10.4.5 might have
made a difference.

Since I had the same experience on 10.3.9, it must have been the
just-try-again that made it work. It turns out that one of the fixes
included in the TT updates is for precisely this problem.

The alternate workaround which TT tech support advises is to start TT
but _not_ agree to auto update when it is offered. After the program
is up, select One-Click Updates from the Online menu. That should
work OK.

Intuit is very lucky that a workaround exists for this bug. As it
is, I expect them to lose a bunch of customers (and a bunch of money
on product returns) because of it.

Re: Turbo Tax problems

I just got off the phone after almost 2 hours of tech support and I finally got it downloaded and working. Thought I would pass some info along as this is what I was told. There were several disks put out, Versions 05.00R and 05.00D that have locked files on them that the Mac cannot open. To use these CDs you must use a program called Locker which you can download here: http://www.vojousoftware.com/products.html .

However it was giving me some problems also so the final result was the tech gave me a code to download a version from the internet. This solved the problem. Hope this helps someone.....

Thanks,
pam

I recently bought TurboTax because I got the impression from this thread that the Mac TurboTax problems were caused by supplementary forms that hadn’t been released yet but that are now out.

Now it seems there is another problem.

I haven’t opened the package yet. Should I return it?

Re: Turbo Tax problems

Last year and the year before I had nasty problems with TTax after I bought early direct and from an Apple Store. This year I waited until early March and bought from Amazon.

I think that Intuit lets their customers field test TTax each year and scrambles to get things right in February.

For people that like TTax when it works and don't feel a need to file early, IMO it's worth waiting until March to but the software.

Re: Turbo Tax problems

After purchasing the new Turbo Tax this year and working on taxes at the last minute, I could not print the file on my windows pc. After installing the program I also can no longer save any Word or Excel document either, not any kind of file. Because it was the last minute I put the program on my other computer and now the same thing is happening on my latest computer. Won't print and has now wiped out the capability of saving a Word or Excel document. Any suggestions? Rolling back to an earlier time didn't work and uninstalling and reinstalling didn't work.

[ Given that this is a Windows issue, I suggest responding to the author directly.

I did our taxes with Windows' Turbo Tax version this year, and I was pleased to find a "Print as PDF file" option directly in the application. In past years I archived the final results by printing to a PostScript file. -Andrew ]

Re: Turbo Tax problems

Did you know when you call Turbo Tax for any information you do not get an "english" speaking person??? Do they all live in Tukey? I cannot get any help after thinking that I filed taxes and finding out a week later they did not get efiled !! How do I get through to someone at the company that at the very least can understand English and has a concept on the US tax system?

Might there be a Turbo Tax user group somewhere?

Re: Turbo Tax problems

For the second year, I'm using my friend's tax preparer rather than
Turbo Tax or any other software. She's more thorough and found a lot
of things I always missed with Turbo Tax. This year will probably be
more complex.

The problem is not the failure to file your tax forms. The problem
would be if you owed money from those years. It's the taxes (money)
due that they really care about, rather than filings (the forms).

I just helped someone who hadn't filed in a couple years earlier this
decade. S/he'd gotten some collection notices from the state saying
that s/he'd owed thousands of dollars (taxes due plus interest plus
penalties). We figured out that s/he actually didn't owe anything
form those years, and so there wasn't any interest or a penalty.

But you are definitely better off taking care of this before your
municipality, the state or feds come after you.

William -

I had a similar problem with TTax a few years ago. It was maddening,
not just non-delivery, but what came didn't work right and took
several calls to find the fix. My conclusion was that Intuit sends
its freshest TTax product to stores, which is where I've got mine
(actually Amazon this year) since the bad experience. I also try not
to order until I have to.

Hope your experience ends better than mine did.

I had the same problem last year (the only of five that I have had
this problem) and I either called or emailed them and they hooked me
up right away. It was not a big deal.

Heck, in this year's, they included an extra CD to pass along to
someone else. They are not stingy with CDs.
