Auto scroll utility mdunkley (apparently) - 04:09pm Mar 7, 2005 PSTvia emailIs there a way of autos-crolling a document with Mac OS X? Some of these blog comments pages are huge, and I'm a speed reader, so it would save me a whole mess of clicking or mousing.
cheers,

If you're reading a web page click once anywhere in the text (but not
on a link) and you can then page down with the spacebar or page back
up with Shift Space.
You could turn on Speakable items and issue a voice command to page down or up.

TidBITS Talk in Apple Mail, too. Except that I did not seem to need to
click in the text in this case? It worked with a pdf in continuous scrolling view, again without having
to click the text, apparently? I'm a Buzan speed reader so that is
really nice. [Using the spacebar as a shortcut for scrolling by one screen has an extremely long history going back to character-based interfaces. It's worth trying in almost any text-reading (but not editing, for obvious reasons) application, and will work in many. -Adam] George

Re: Auto scroll utility
thanks for the suggestions, kind folks.
when i said i get tired of clicking and mousing, i should have said
'space-barring' as well!
what i need is a command and speed control that will scroll at my
chosen reading speed, ideally keeping the line or image i'm reading in
the middle of my screen.
doesn't sound like it would be impossible to code, compared to some of
the functions this mac can do!
am i really the first person to think it would be cool?
I somehow doubt it...

window, the window is scrolled automatically; you control the speed by how
close the cursor is to that edge. So you could conceivably use it to
approximate what you're looking for. < http://www.catchysoftware.com/products/maximice/>
