Good streetmap software for Macs?

[meckert]meckert - 05:46am Mar 7, 2005 PST

Is there anything for Macs that is as cool as Microsoft Streets & Trips? Is there even a decent second-place?

[I can't compare, but we reviewed Route 66 a while back. It might also be worth looking at the new Google Maps, which works with Safari now (more or less). -Adam]

I can't really compare either as I haven't used Streets & Trips very much. I
used Route 66 on my PowerBook and it was exceedingly good at getting me around
Oregon when we got lost there.

The maps seem really accurate -- I use my parents address & work
address to see
how accurate a map's database is. My parents address is regularly 1 to
5 miles
off. Our address at work is frequently missing altogether (technically
it's on
a little stub road joining two other roads, so it is frequently left off maps
as it looks like an intersection between the two roads it is joining.)

Route 66 (2004 edition -- after an update or two) had my parents house
within a
few blocks. Can't remember if our work address is in the db yet. Since my
powerbook went down and I shifted to a mini, which isn't as useful in a car, I
haven't gotten around to installing it yet.

I did have problems running Route 66 as a user other than administrator. If I
remember correctly I had to go into the Applications folder and make sure all
users could read/write the Route 66 folder and all sub-folders.

I checked out Route 66 some years ago and stopped after finding numerous problems, including running the Dumbarton Bridge (SF bay area) over dry land. It may have improved over the interim, but I'm not willing to spend money to find out.

Re: Good streetmap software for Macs?

DeLorme used to make a wonderful US/wide mapping program, including one version that came with a gps and the software for the computer to show you where you were and help you follow a preselected path to where you were going. It was awesome. DeLorme quit selling it because of a lack of customers <sigh> I miss it VERY much. Route 66 is, at its very best, a poor substitue...
