iPod updates (and iPod photo redux)

So... now the rumored iPod update has come, no bluetooth as was rumored,
but the 30 gig iPod makes a return, 40 gig 'pods are gone, and massive
price drops on the Photo models.

<http://emperor.tidbits.com/.3c59d245>

I'm going to miss the 40 gig models; I could just barely fit my current
collection on a 30, but that'd leave me with no room for expansion. I
have to wonder why they dropped the 40 gig model, unless they really
want to push the 60 gig; I can't remember another occasion where the
middle model actually dropped in capacity.

As I said last fall when they first introduced them, the Photos have
some nice minor improvements above and beyond the photo capability, and
even the photo capabilities were mildly interesting - but I didn't think
they were worth the $100 premium Apple was trying to charge for them.
Judging by the adjustments Apple made in the photo lineup and pricing,
I'd say Apple came to the same conclusion; the new 30 gig and repriced
60 gig come in at prices that fit neatly into the price/capacity
framework of the 'standard' 4th gen iPods. I expect them to be a lot
more successful at these prices... though eliminating the 40 gig
standard model means you don't have much choice if you want a
larger-capacity iPod.

And it looks like they're also coming out with the one accessory that I
thought would make it worth it for me, a direct camera-to-Pod download
interface. Yay!

The iPod minis are mildly interesting; I didn't trust the rumors of
color screens for the mini, but I am surprised they kept the original 4
gig model at a $200 price point. That's low enough to be tempting as a
second 'Pod, and for only $50 more than the shuffle...

I recall seeing (somewhere) that the 30 gig drive is single-platter, whereas
the 40 gig drive no longer in use was 2 platters. The result is a thinner
drive, and a thinner iPod, and perhaps more reliability, with only one head
assembly to break.

Yes. I too have been waiting for this. But... According to the Apple
Web-site:

"iPod photo supports syncing photos from the most popular formats
(JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF and PNG) and even lets you carry around
full-resolution copies of your photos."

So, even though iPhoto has gained the much awaited RAW capability, I
guess the iPod photo does not have the ability to display RAW files.
That's fine, but I certainly hope that the camera-to-Pod accessory will
have the ability to suck down RAW and later transfer them to iPhoto,
even if it cannot display RAW files.

This grabbed my attention also.

However, I've not be able to find much info on it. Has anyone heard
if it requires something extra on the iPod Photo end? ie one of the
new models or perhaps a software upgrade to the older ones? It looks
like a great accessory (assuming the transfer speed is sufficient to
avoid significant battery drain on the iPod or camera) but with the
current lack of detail I'm a little concerned it will not be
backwards compatible with the original iPod Photo models.

Adrian Smith

Yes, the new Photo Connector will work with the previous iPod photo models. From http://www.appleinsider.com/news.php?id=910 :

Apple vp describes iPod Camera Connector
Feb 24 - 1:00 pm EST  Along with new iPod photo models, Apple yesterday announced the iPod Camera connector, an optional (US)$29 accessory that enables iPod users to connect their digital camera to an iPod to transfer photos. But the company only described the device and did not produce a photo. In an interview with
CNet News.com, Apple vice president, Greg Joswiak, described the camera connector as "a small white plastic device, similar in appearance to a small docking station, that has a cable for connecting to the iPod and a USB port for connecting to a camera." It will work with both the new iPod photos and with earlier photo player models, said Joswiak, who also heads Apple's iPod product marketing. "Pictures loaded onto an iPod directly will be able to display immediately on the iPod. But for the photos to be shown on a TV, the iPod Photo will need to be connected to a Mac or PC first."

For me, the really interesting question is whether it will work with
non-photo iPods, such as my 3G 40GB.

When I went looking for music players, one criterion was that it be able to
store photos from my camera while I was out hiking. So I got the Belkin
Media Reader (BMR), which is oversized, overpriced, and SLOW. Slow means it
runs down the iPod battery since the HD is spinning during the entire
transfer. (The SD card can transfer about 4 times as fast as the BMR, and
the iPod much faster than that. Belkin's response: "works as implemented".)

So I'd love to be able to replace the BMR with a cheap, light, fast device.
And I only want it for carrying the photos -- expanding the camera capacity
-- not for displaying them.

Edward
